I've always heard the 1g/1lb of LBM...

Either way, I try not to worry about it.

In the end, carbs and pro are both 4cals per gram, so just find your balance and fill in the fat you need.

well of course that's all that matters in the end, but I know for myself it wouldn't be possible without all the planning, math, and tracking calories/progression. Everyone's different I guess

dabears, I suggest you read Lyle's The Protein Book or read the articles in his web site. The issue about excess protein ingestion is discussed there, i.e. even if you end up oxidizing excess AAs, this may have long term anabolic effects:

Quote:
Quite in fact, the nitrogen balance studies discussed in Chapter 4 often find that protein in
excess of requirements is simply oxidized in the liver (11). I should note that, although
AA oxidation has a negative connotation (e.g. AAs oxidized in the liver can't be used to
support protein synthesis or recovery), this isn't necessarily the case. The increased
oxidation of AAs is thought to play a role in the overall "anabolic drive" of the body and
may have benefits in terms of increasing muscle mass (12,13)
.

I have read it, and all his information is well presented... I consider him one of the leading authorities on nutrition in general.

The goal here was to focus on the opposite side of the spectrum, the minimum requirement... I'll "cherry pick" that part from this article. I still believe there is some benefit beyond what the article may say is overkill (because of lyles work).

I see, I don't recall him recommending anything less than 1g-1.5g of protein per lbs of LBM even on his rapid fat loss diet. I believe this is to retain some of the anabolic drive and also to minimize LBM loss while cutting (which is inevitable)

If you need to cut, cut fat, carbs, protein, in that order. It sounds like the safest way IMO.

I agree on safest, but I'm finding through practice that it is far from the easiest, so I was glad to know my muscles aren't falling off me as we speak lol.

I think the fact I eat close to maintenance / majority of carbs & calories post workout three times a week on my cut will do more for LBM retention than protein consumption anyways

My buddy thinks it was cocaine use in Thailand that led to his "preconditioned heart defect"
