Would you upgrade to an e90 330i?

I've recently been browsing classifieds for fun and came across a few 2006 330i's fully loaded sport package with idrive navigation. It got me thinking of upgrading. I would love to get a 335i but fear the maintenance on them out of warranty.

So would you trade your e46 for an e90 330i? Keep in mind my car does not have sport package or leather seats

I was tempted by one of those before I picked up my 46. Be careful if the factory warranty is out, repair can cost an arm and a leg.

Yeah.. I'd wait for maintenance cost to go down a bit . Or get lucky and buy one where PO was starting repairs but cost became too great and he had to abandon it. Pick up where he left off and bam!

Although it may look new-ish, it's a 7-8 year old car that may already have over 100K. Recently Car and driver's long term test 3 series needed a steering rack, $3500 repair, it had to be ordered from Germany.

yikes.. for some reason I thought the 330i was bulletproof and it was the 335i that you wanted to stay away from.. perhaps a G37 then...

Early E90 is no-go. Unreliable early N5x engine, too many fancy electric parts, etc...
Unless the owner replaced water pump and cylinder head under warranty, I'd stick with good ol' E46

I did, a little over two years ago. Though it was a 325I, with sport and premium package and 6-speed manual. Still a 3.0L engine though.

The car had a bit over 60,000 miles, needed new tires (great excuse to change out the runflats), otherwise pristine condition. Purchased for just under $16K.

The car was fully checked by my independent BMW mechanic, so I purchased it without an extended warranty, which was a bit of a gamble, and I probably wouldn't have taken that gamble with an automatic, then again I wouldn't have bought one with an auto.

Anything wrong after two years and 30,000 miles? Just one of the coils needed to be replaced, which was $57.

Upgrade

What areas are you looking to upgrade? I drove an e90 330i 6spd sport package shortly before test driving my 330i 6spd zhp and I ended up buying the e46 because I thought it was a bit more engaging to drive.

I thought about getting an E90 330xi but could not convince myself on the styling, especially the interiors, so I picked up a fully loaded e46 325xi. Once its time to upgrade, it might be an infiniti

The E90 sedan is hideous.

I owned a e46 330Ci till it was recently totaled. Been reading horror stories on problems with the 335i cars and really don't car for the E90 interior design (no offense E90 lovers).

Purchased my 2005 for 16k 22 months ago. Mechanical investment after purchase totals $4k and includes the 100k tuneup, replacement of front bushings, water pump, plugs, coil packs, tranny flush, coolant flush, etc.

So, in summary, I was very pleased with my e46

Overall the E90 330i has been a fairly reliable car by BMW standards, but it's still a 7-8 year old BMW. Comparing the pre-facelift 2006-2009 E90's to the facelift version, they're definitely less attractive.

Maintenance issues aside, I find the car abit soft and big ... not like the E46. But keep in mind that these are seat of the pants impressions. I didn't care for the E90.

I've had an '06 330xi E90 for 5 1/2 years; long for me, but the car has been very reliable and has every option except Nav. Recently acquired an '06 330 Cic ZHP.

The E90 feels like an E46 that has matured. Smoother ride, once the RFT's were gone, more solid feel though we're comparing a sedan to a 'vert. Things like the rain-sensing wipers and audio controls are more intuitive, roomier. Overall, not a whole lot of difference.

Maintenance is not bad on the 325i, 328i and 330i E90s. It really isn't.

Having said that, the cars are quite boring. I could've got an E90 330i sport for less than I paid for my most recent ZHP. I said no thanks.

The motor feels more electric. The car feels almost as heavy as the understeer. The steering feel is nice, but the transmission feels rubbery.

Yea like some of the others here, after I totaled my first e46 I test drove an e90 330i and didn't care for like my e46.

So I got another e46.
