My Ride: 94 325i full m3 swap
Awesome deal! I will definitely be considering these once I decide to swap out the old Racelands that came on the car when I bought it. Maybe late this summer sometime.

Morning Snik,

Yea that's true, they do look a lot like the FK Highsport. But in reality if you were to lay the Solo, FK, ST, KW, etc all side by side aren't they all going to "look" pretty similar?

As a dealer for both Solo and FK it is pretty easy to compare the FK Highsports to the Solo S1's head to head:

FK Highsports-
- Height adjustable, with preset shock dampening
- Regular steel construction with Gold Zinc coating/galvanizing
- Aluminum spring perches
- 1 Year warranty provided by FK Germany

Solo Werks
- Height adjustable, with preset shock dampening
- Regular steel construction with heavy Gold Zinc coating/galvanizing
- Aluminum spring perches
- 3 Year warranty provided by Solo Werks USA

Additionally the main points we see that are important to our customers are:
  • FK Highsports typically $800 shipped vs. Solo $499 shipped
  • FK 1 year warranty vs. Solo 3 year warranty
  • FK No US tech support vs. Solo in California

All other external features appear to be pretty close ie, lowering range, galvanization on the housings , spring color, etc.

Let me know if you have any additional questions

Thanks,
Matt@AMI

I was actually just in contact with them in regards to the E46 M the other day for a different customer. They are currently working on the M kits for both E36 and E46. Both kits are close to completion but their working on a nice feature for the E46 consumers...

According to Solo, there is a substantial amount of customers who are wanting to use a linear type spring in the front as opposed to the progressive rated oem style like most other coilover manufacturers are currently using. This is due to a lot of M drivers are wanting to track their cars and with the linear rate design it makes it easy to swap in and out different spring rates to suit the drivers liking. They are currently testing a simple design that will allow use of a linear spring combined with the factory upper bearing and mount. This design will not require the use of a expense adjustable type mount but they still can be used if the customer desires.

We've obviously become big supporters of these guys over the last year and a half (especially over in the VW community) but it's refreshing to see a company (albeit new and rather small in comparison to the other big players in the marketplace) listening and responding to their customers "wants" and trying to give it to them rather than giving them what they think the customer "needs".... jmo

So lately we've been getting quite a few PM's, Phone calls, etc. all asking the same basic question and all having the same concern:

If the Solo-Werks kits are so good how can they be priced this cheap? You get what you pay for right?

This is normally a great rule of thumb, but let's look at this from a different perspective and look at the big picture from Solo-Werks's vantage point.

How many hands/business/middlemen do you think are involved in the sale of your $1000+ coilover kit in between the manufacturer and yourself? In a lot of cases it's two and sometimes three before it is sold to you. It usually breaks down like this: Manufacturer, Wholesale distributor warehouse, retailer and finally to the consumer.

In Solo's case there is only one, and that's guys like me. Solo manufactures it, distributes it to me and I sell it to you. Fewer hands means lower pricing for you.

A couple of other points to consider is simply overhead, they are not supporting a staff of 30 -50 or even 100 employees. You don't see tens of thousands of marketing dollars spent annually on magazine ads and Drift Series sponsorships - only funds for engineering and production and face to face shows like Waterfest in NJ and the Big So Cal Euro & Dubfest in September.

I realize that it’s rare these days but there still are companies out there that just want to put a good product to market at a reasonable price that’s not junk without all the corporate BS and backscratching.

I hope that helps take care of the elephant in the room but if anyone has any other questions in regards to fit, finish, ride quality etc. please feel free to let me know as I have installed Solo’s on all three of the BMW offered platforms and majority of the VW applications here in our shop so I can give a real world opinion of my result.
