Everybody knew it would fail. The NRA owns too many republicans.

Or perhaps those republicans represent their constituents well, especially the most vocal types.

Don't forget that dems voted it down too...

he NRA's unbending opposition to better gun-control measures does not actually reflect the views of the nation's gun owners or, for that matter, its claimed 4 million members. A May 2012 poll conducted by Republican pollster Frank Luntz revealed surprising moderation on behalf of NRA members: Three out of four believed that background checks should be completed before every gun purchase. Nearly two-thirds supported a requirement that gun owners alert police when their firearms are lost or stolen. "Their members are much more rational than the management of the NRA," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, tells Rolling Stone. "They're out of touch."
Quote:
Then something extraordinary happened: The NRA blew up the deal, letting senators know that any votes for the bill would be recorded as votes against the NRA. "You could see them on the Senate floor looking at their BlackBerrys and changing their votes," says Kessler. The bill died by a vote of 8 to 90.

The NRA does not represent rights. It represents companies. It's ironic that some of you think anti-NRA people are "the sheep."

Anything attached to Bloomberg's name can immediately be dismissed.

That being said, there was a poll conducted 2 weeks ago indicating that support for new gun laws was seriously waning. I'll try to find it. Point is, most of these statistics are derived from the emotion of Sandy Hook; they don't represent true reality. Not to mention the way the question is asked as a very real impact on the survey results.

Here ya go. Kinda dated, but within 30 days. Just goes to show you how much these polls can swing. A CNN poll, no less.

Quote:
A new national poll suggests that support for major restrictions on guns may be fading, three months after the horrific shootings at an elementary school in Connecticut.

Although a majority of Americans favored major restrictions on guns or an outright ban in the wake of the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, when a heavily armed gunman killed 20 young students and six adults, a new CNN/ORC International survey indicates that support has tumbled to just 43%, as more time has passed since that December tragedy.

It doesn't vary as much as that wording would make you think- especially regarding minor things like background checks.

These screenshots are from the poll used in the article you linked to:

The statistics above show a majority for nothing in reality. Sure, most of us agree that there should be some restrictions on owning guns (criminals). That's where the 70% comes from.

Beyond that, theres no clear majority

It was your link.

I really don't see a logical argument against background checks nor have I ever heard one. Do you want to lay one out for me? Please abstain from linking to anything that has to do with the NRA.

He spoke about 2 hours ago. He basically said we should be ashamed of the politicians because they shot down the "background check bill". He neglected to state the many more bullet points in the bill.
