If you want power gains, it sounds like you need headers.

Do some research on how to get power from the S54 motor

I would look in to ap or rouge engineering, magnaflow make some of the most restrictive exhuast system out on the after market line do to the bafulling that they used in the resonators as well as mufflers to produce the sound that have.

My Ride: E92 soon?
If you did more research you'll find that aftermarket companies make section 1 with cats so you can still pass inspection with headers.

Exhaust systems do not yield much power on E46 M3s (headers do) and both exhausts you listed are not going to give you the most power out of all possible options.

I got Magnaflow and I'm happy with it. It's a bit raspy but not too loud. Borla in my opinion would sound louder. Either which you choose will be good.

Headers and Bimmerworld exhaust will give maximum gains. bimmerworld is making 10hp over competitors exhaust with their single.

and they're a fair bit cheaper. the only problem is you lose the quad outlets (a cool look imo)

That is my hold up to, but it's hard to turn down the performance benefit. With Bimmerworlds new cf rear splitter/diffuser that is built for their single exit it looks pretty good.
