Unhappy What in the world does this button do??

Hey guys,

I've just been curious lately about this button. I'm pretty OCD about knowing every function of my car, and I've been pretty good about it so far. But what in the hell does this button do???? I've pushed it before, during, and after driving and also on a hill as the picture on the button suggests but it does absolutely nothing... I sincerely hope this isn't another limiting device BMW jammed in my car (i.e. DSC -_-)

thanks for your help

The icon looks like decent control?

Something to keep your speed in check as you are going down a steep slope perhaps. This is a new one to me as well.

it is in the manual, my page 84 for my 03. Its the Hill Descent Control or HDC. From the manual... By reducing the vehicles speed on steep downhill stretches, HDC maintains predictable vehicle handling response to provide you with control of your BMW during extreme descents. HDC is available for activation at vehicle speeds below apx 22mph. When driving down steep hills, the vehicle reduces speed automatically down to about double walking speed, apx 7.5 mph and then maintains this speed at a constant.

It's for going down a steep hill, think San Francisco streets. It will keep you're speed constant between 5-20mph (or something like that).

Pretty useless IMO.

I have to agree. I used it once and did not like how it made the car act, it just didnt seem ok, it seemed to really stress the car out. I just put the shifter over to the manual side and control my decent my way.

Oh wow! thanks for all the clarifying responses! Now I'm just curious as to why BMW thought this was a good option to offer ... most of the time when i am driving a slope i am usually going quite a bit faster than 20 mph LOL

curiously, my XI's owners manual seems to be missing the HDC content.... pg 84 is for DSC and the sort...

Yeah, it takes you down to 7 mph, crazy slow. IDK why they put it on there, maybe some euro thing....cruzin down some Alps road and you need to practically stop cuz u r scared to go any faster or something.

I think the thinking is it would be useful for going down a snow covered hill to keep your speed in check. I'm guessing it was only included on XIs for e46s.

I've used it at the BMW performance center on an X5 on their off road course. It was kinda cool I guess, although I feel like it was more of a feature to show off rather than actually being useful.

Also, it looks like a duck on a skateboard...

So today i tried it out on a high slope road behind my house. I have to agree with MiniXP and KakusJaque, it really stresses the Car out, and it sounded as if leila was being strangled D: cant do that again, id prefer to control descent my own way

The reason it's there is because the DSC-X system in the car has it built in from the X5 so the cost to add it to the Xi was nothing.

That said, it's a pointless system for this car and the only time I've used it was to see what it did.

I was hoping it was the eject button for when the passenger side air bag makes too much noise!
