Love my e39 M5, so far in 2.5 years maintenance is only up slightly over my e46. Amazing cars, take your time and find the right one (I found my 1 owner after about 3-4 months looking)

Looks clean, OP!

The e39 platform has to be one of the most gorgeous cars ever styled...

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like 02-03 would be better but I emailed the owner of the car in my OP and that car has a great history and looks to be in great shape. I hate the look of that old 4:3 nav though...anyone with an e39 done an upgrade to Dynavin or aftermarket head units? I google it a bit but couldn't find solid info on non-MK IV options.

If you live in California then you might be in one of the best places in America to wait for the perfect car...

Someone feel free to chime in, but I believe you can just buy the MkIV DVD player for the trunk and the widescreen Nav up front. I think they're both plug and play.

Yeah that's what I read, I was just hoping there was an easy way to do something that wasn't the Mark IV since that system is still 8+ years old. I heard there were issues on cars with DSP audio but haven't been able to find a ton of detail on it.

Let's put it this way, you ain't buying an e39 M5 for the Nav technology... if you can't stand it throw in a MK III or MK IV in the trunk and the updated screen in the cabin or take it out and get a Dynavin. And BTW you can still get updated maps for MK III or MK IV or even the MK II unit in the 2000 you are looking at

Is it me or does the front of the e39 look too dated in stock form and not in a good way, the rest of the car is though.

The back end is definitely its best angle.

I have always loved the E39 M5 but I'm terrified to spend 15-20k on one and get destroyed by maintenance costs. Everything I've heard is that they are a lot more expensive then e46s.

Personally I think the looks are timeless....It won't be mistaken for a brand new car, but it still looks fantastic.

agreed, it was a dream car for me growing up...because it was in one of those Need for Speed games. The M3 was never even on the radar but once I test drove one, game over.
