Exactly, the M5 is just timeless.

Thanks! I am gonna try to look at the car tomorrow. Excited.
attaboy! but dont get over and forget to follow the basics like getting either a VERY trusted, reliable BMW independent mechanic friend of yours test drive it and put it up on a hoist to test out most of the problems people pointed out in this thread. Even though it's not 100% reliable (like the pull-out method lol, as a reference to my promiscuity lol), I try to test drive 2-3 MINT conditions of the vehicle I want (same manuf. year) that are well out of my price range, so I can get a feel of how the engine should sound and respond in terms of acceleration, high speed (interior rattle as well), and handling (how the suspension creaks/responds too). Then maybe you don't need the VANOS or compression tests, which I imagine would be more expensive inspections.

The test drive is 100% MUST DO so you can get a feel for a good deal, and the PPI is a MUST, whether at a stealer or an indy. Do both and you will be very happy, as I am with my second e46 M3 vert.

He said recirculating ball doesn't provide as much feedback as rack and pinion and the M ****ing division noted that on the standard V8 and upgraded the steering system with servotronics to provide that feedback and then some. You're just being a tool.

Edit: and I noted anyone who tossed around a 5 or any similar sized vehicle in the canyons knows it's way too big to begin with.

So much bullshit spewed all over this thread. Rofl.

Head on over to M5Board for some real life experiences if you are actually serious. I bought mine last November. Been driving it for 5 weeks and have enjoyed every single second. That glorious sound (with an exhaust) and torquey V8 make every dollar worth it. Yes, it's more expensive to run than my E46 was, but this thing is sheer joy when driving and is beautiful to look at as well. I love my '02, my only regret is that I didn't get into one sooner.

I have been averaging 18MPG with mixed city and highway. If I do a lot of highway, I can get around 22-24MPG.

If you can afford it, buy it. You'll be amazed at how happy you will be with it.

It's actually pretty good for a stock BMW system designed over a decade ago. There's enough low end with the deck mounted dual 10" woofers to not desire aftermarket subs (unless you're a bass junkie), but I find the mids are a bit hollow and lacking. It's still good enough for me that I don't find myself wanting to spend on audio upgrades - unlike with my E46. Definitely a good option to have when shopping for an E39.

Those numbers are questionable at best. A Boxster weights about 3200...

yes and the e46 m is over 3,500 IIRC, i recently researched this in that 335 thread. the 1 series was around 3,400...and that's just the curb weight and not the GVW which is more realistic.
