E46 M54 Engine Problems...

My 2003 325i e46 M54 is acting strange. After driving the car for about 20 minutes itís as though a switch is flipped and the engine characteristics completely change. It happens all of the sudden.

Symptoms include:
Engine noise is different Ė loud howling/whooshing sound under acceleration
Noticeable power/performance loss but still completely drive-able
RPMís seem to climb slower and fall slower than usual (almost resistant to rev)
Overall does not feel smooth/sporty Ė feels like a truck engine.
Idle is normal
Goes away and returns intermittently throughout long drives.
Fuel mileage is pretty bad Ė estimated 16 MPG (exclusively city)

This is frustrating because itís very intermittent. My wife doesn't even notice when it happens thatís how little of an effect this has on the driveability of the car. Itís more of a nuisance to me than anything

It had similar symptoms about a year ago and it turned out an incompetent mechanic had not secured the clamp holding the intake boot on causing a vacuum leak. Might be another vacuum leak. Any other ideas? Vanos seals?

I had my passenger video the tach yesterday when I happened to try and capture the sound and slow revís.
