In case you had your blinders on.....
--

Lawmakers from both parties have devoted nearly half a billion dollars in taxpayer money over the past two years to build improved versions of the 70-ton Abrams.

Yet in the case of the Abrams tank, there's a bipartisan push to spend an extra $436 million on a weapon the experts explicitly say is not needed.

A letter signed by 173 Democratic and Republican members of the House last year and sent to then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta demonstrated the depth of bipartisan support for the Abrams program on Capitol Hill.

This is actually quite common, sadly, we have politicians pushing for military equipment because the manufacturer is in their district but no one wants the stuff.

GEN Odierno is not "some random general". He's the Army Chief of Staff.

It's from the Associated Press and I would hardly consider the CSA some random General. He is the General of The United States Army. He's quoted as saying "If we had our choice, we would use that money in a different way."

nah, it's just Ohio in regards to this topic. Lima, OH is where the tank plant is.

To further the point, this story - or similar one - was written by CNN a while ago. There are ~2000+ tanks sitting in a depot collecting dust in CA.

http://security.blogs.cnn.com/2012/1...-but-no-tanks/
Quote:
CNN was allowed rare access to what amounts to a parking lot for more than 2,000 M-1 Abrams tanks. Here, about an hour's drive north of Reno, Nevada, the tanks have been collecting dust in the hot California desert because of a tiff between the Army and Congress.

The U.S. has more than enough combat tanks in the field to meet the nation's defense needs - so there's no sense in making repairs to these now, the Army's chief of staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno told Congress earlier this year.
And this in regards to the HASC:
Quote:
What its reporters found was General Dynamics campaign contributions given to lawmakers at key times, such as around congressional hearings, on whether or not to build more tanks.
Quote:
Lawmakers that CNN interviewed denied that donations influenced their decisions to keep the tanks rolling.

Rep. Buck McKeon, a Republican from California and chairman of the House armed services committee, said he didn't know General Dynamics had given him $56,000 in campaign contributions since 2009 until CNN asked him about it
.

I remember they (Congress) did this several years ago and compelled the Air Force to buy a bunch of C130's that they did not want because it provided jobs for several congressional districts.

It's not new. I bet it happens every year, we just don't always hear about it.

I honestly believe that is why NASA still exists in its current form. Because it provides so many jobs.
