Best Racing Driver of All Time

I'd vote for Mario Andretti. He's the only driver in the world to have won the Indy 500, Daytona 500, F1 Championship, and World Sportcar Championship. On top of that, he has over 100 career wins at all levels of racing. He was also the last American to win an F1 Race (1978 Dutch Grand Prix). He's also 1 of 3 drivers in the world to have won races on a Road Course, Paved Oval and dirt track all in 1 season.

Who's your vote for and WHY?

Senna and Schumacher are amazing drivers but not as diverse in their portfolio as Andretti was.

Also truth be told they were champions in different era's...I mean Comparing the cars from the 1950's F1 to the 1970's to the 1990's they are all huge leaps from each other and the balls needed to drive them differ.compare a car that would spontaneously burst in to flames (1950's reliability ) to the 1970's (Aero? overrated says Enzo Ferrari) to the 1990's (running your opponent in to the wall is fine so long as you win the drivers championship right?)

there are still so many names out there that would deserve that title. I agree schumacher and senna should be names mentioned but what about phill hill or steve mcqueen?

"Racing Driver" is a pretty broad topic actually. The skill level and type of skill required for each type of racing is hugely different. For example, F1 racing requires insane focus, precision, and reaction times to control a car at such speeds. Rally racing on the other hand requires a more flexible driving style to deal with the different terrain and obstacles, as well as a lot of trust in your co-driver. Both very good drivers, but different styles.

+1 to Mario. Won at so many different levels across many disciplines. Raced during a time when it was common for a few drivers to be killed each season and still put it on the line every time.

Thats why its hard to compare across eras. Drivers are so specialized now.

JPM has had a lot of success, but he hasn't won much in stock cars.

Fangio. Foyt. John Force.

It's possible Donohue would be on par with Andretti had he lived longer.

Based on career-long success across different types of racing, I think Mario Andretti has to be called the best ever.

The late Dan Wheldon was my favorite driver. I figured Senna would be mentioned a bunch here.
