Second, if this company only uses english for all such signs and communications, how did she get the job in the first place? If the employer is going to hire people who they know do not speak english, they than have certain workplace safety responsibilities. However, that is what safety icons are there to represent.

"The Auraria Campus believes employees should understand some basic English." OK, not an issue IMO. However, if they are going to do that, than why did they hire these people in the first place?
Now this is an interesting point. Should it be required that employers ONLY hire those who understand english (or at least basic english) to ensure the safety of their employees? I can see that quickly turning into discrimination... but then again, it's also discriminating by hiring those who DON'T speak english in that it puts them in harm's way when they can't read signs. In other words, it's a double edged sword.

The case is just another example of how perverted the view is of so many in this country.. "They owe me a sign in Spanish"....

We are just creating a world of morons.

This thread is an excellent reminder to grab that Spanish learning set from Rosetta Stone.

I learned English when I came here. I'm now realizing I should have just demanded everyone else learn German and all signs should be in German.

Be right back, gonna go slip on some water at Walmart, then sue them because the warning wasn't in German and hit up Al for the race card.

But seriously how ****ing hard is it to learn the main language of the country you live in? When I moved here it took me 6 months, granted I was 4 and it's easier when you are young. On the other hand, both my parents picked up enough Swedish in under a year to read warning labels and signs when we moved there and they were in their 40s.

One can argue it is also "just another case of employers who do not care for the safety of their employees".

It is not discrimination, it is obviously a mandatory job qualification to do the job safely. This is why there are thing like licensed electricians to work on high voltage. They have a proven a mandatory skill set and training.

Oh yes...let's make this a case about discrimination. That way all the people who are rejected simply because they don't have a degree can sue for discrimination as well. Then we can watch the entire edifice of "college education and advanced degrees" go down the waste pipe. Now that would be worth it.

They don't have to buy Rosetta Stone. There are ESL classes all over the friggin place, and they're not expensive.

Eh, to each their own. I've DL'd illegal music (Daft Punk, anyone?) but for some reason I wouldn't feel as dedicated to it if I snagged it for free online.....maybe it has to do something with the price tag. My moral compass is flexible with an $8.99 CD but not a $400 program, lol.

Ask yourself, if your friend let you borrow a copy for 6 months to learn Spanish, is that illegal?

If you're going to move to a country that predominantly speaks another language, it would probably do you some good to learn it at a basic level.

No, not at all. However, there is a stark difference between borrowing it from a friend who paid for it (RS allows up to 5 devices, I believe), and downloading it from a torrent site.

Yep.
I would be quite happy to see the entire edifice of "higher education" go down the pipe. Most of it is a joke. Including many of the "hard sciences". 99%+ of the CS grads will never write or even care how a compiler actually works. Trade schools and apprenticeship programs would be much better. (and cheaper )
