Yup.

"Back in MY day I had to walk to school...uphill...both ways! Shoes, you had SHOES? I tied newspapers to my feet!"

Well, there are blanket generalizations, then there's reality.

There's an old saying: "Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves (basically, working-class to working-class) in three generations." Generally it's because of the phenomenon you describe--one generation works hard, gets into the middle class, and makes life easier for their kids, who coast, and then their kids don't know how to work at all and fall right back down to working-class (or worse, perhaps).

Unfortunately, I see it frequently with my estate planning clients. They'll work hard all their lives, and once they pass away their kids piss everything away in short order.

There are so many studies out there that show that wealth rarely makes it past the 3rd generation.

As far as I can tell, she's just saying that PE is stupid. And US military academy, Fortune 500, Federal Law enforcement don't look to see what grade you got in PE - they want to see your leadership in the real thing.

I hated PE. I liked playing on the lacrosse team in high school and would hang out in the weight room almost every spare moment . . . but actual PE - especially in elementary school/junior high - was usually stupid. I just remember a lot of injuries and yelling as the PE teacher tried to make kids run hurdles. No real team building or leadership was involved.
