Why so much to ship?

I've been looking into sourcing prices for new tie rods for my ZHP and I was planning on replacing the boots and clamps as well- man are OE boots/clamps expensive ($55/side)!

Fortunately I found ECS selling the boots with zip ties (instead of the clamps which apparently are $$) for around $10 a side- MTC brand- Not sure on quality, but it beats the cost of new boots and I'd rather roll the dice rather than use old boots.

Now I live in Canada close to the border and I've purchased multiple things from the US- from car parts to golf clubs- ECS tuning is charging me almost $45 for the cheapest shipping method?! I'm curious as to WHY? It's not heavy by any means (rubber boots!) and I just cant seem to grasp why I must pay 2x the cost of the item for shipping that doesn't even include brokerage fee. Never in my life have I paid so much for a little lightweight parcel.

I am NOT trying to BASH anybody here, I have purchased from ECS before and I am VERY pleased with their products and delivery time. I still am going to buy from them, but I'd just like to find out any information on why these costs are so high- I'm no expert when it comes to international logistics.

Thanks

Our shipping prices are set by the individual couriers not by us, due to the International shipping laws we're required to follow and restrictions associated with International shipping (even in the same continent) cause the shipping to Canada to be costly. To work around the Canadian shipping costs I have several customers who ship products to locations just on the US side of the boarder then travel across to pick them up, I believe their are several groups which allow "piggy backing" of their address in this fashion near the boarder.
