Help car won't start

I tried to start my car and thing happens. I tried to jump it and still nothing. I can hear the pppff noise from the fuel pump. Is it the starter you think? The last couple weeks when it starts it takes a couple seconds for it to start. I was about to change my battery but I don't think that is the problem.

When you put the key in and turn it (not starting it) do you hear the fuel pump prime?

when you turn the key to the 1 position, do the dash lights come on, along with the radio?

Also, have you had any problems in the past with it not starting on the first try?

Have you done any work involving your electrical system? I would start with the easy and inexpensive steps by testing the battery(just to make sure), alternator(can be done without removal) and checking your belts. Maybe checking your ignition(coils, plugs). When it started rough, was your starter hesitating? does it "click" when you try to start your car?

Try this:
locate the starter, have someone start the car (careful with moving parts) and if you feel a click the solenoid is trying to engage and the starter may be jammed, if there is no click its probably the solenoid. If starter is jammed, try hitting it while someone tries to start the car.

I'm with Carlos... Start on the cheap stuff and eliminate it. When was the last time you measured the battery voltage?

I would go get a battery terminal cleaner...

Take your terminals off... Clean the posts and the terminals... Check the voltage and get back to us.

No click or sound from the engine. The lights don't dim when I engage to start. I will get the car lifted and see if someone can feel moving parts in the starter

Have you check for blown fuses? Check your engine control fuse, this may be preventing you from starting the car.

All this work and talk and you still haven't measured the voltage at the battery?

Sounds like my car.... Car was starting slow for a week, like a weak battery. One day it just clicked like a loose connection and then just stopped making any noise.

Checked all fuses, voltages...I could feel the solenoid and verified it was getting voltage...

Ended up being the starter... Got a brand new Bosch from advance auto parts for $150

Replaced it from the top....a real pain in the butt.... Took like 6 hours. There are a few threads that detail it too. Being am XI it's a bit different.... Good luck, it's a real bear of a job.

I had a coin get in the gearshift and keep it from hitting park/neutral switch and that would not allow starter to spin.

Did you turn the key and hold it then the starter took a couple of seconds before taking off (ews communication problem)try both keys

or did it drag/spin slow right away check for 12volts to starter when trying to start.

have continuous power need starter check starter conection point past where voltage was read first
