Cold Sores

Does anybody here deal with them?

Interesting article here regarding a cure vs treatment. I read somewhere a while back that there is not enough research to find a "cure" so this might give people hope.

really? that must be pretty tough to deal with. Do you worry that you will get it, or that it will erupt?

Hmm... I'd be worried about the lotion killing other cells with the virus... doesn't seem like it is specifically targeting a certain type of cell

I generally don't worry about it. She can feel it coming on a day or two before it actually pops up, and we just don't do much for a few days. She gets a quick valtrex prescription and it really cuts down on how long she has the cold sore for.

Generally, stress brings it on.

Something in the article does not make sense. How does the nano particle distinguish HSV virus DNA from normal cells' DNA? If this method could work, pretty much all viruses could be cured using it, from HIV to HPV to HSV. Some people will be very rich.

the article says "The lotion will also work for genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease, and Professor Baker says it is being looked at as a potential treat-ment for a range of other viruses, including HIV, Ebola and smallpox."

do you think there will ever be a cure for diseases like this?

It's tricky with these viruses because they're mostly dormant and there is no way we know of it yet that can terminate them without killing healthy cells. I'm sure with time we'll have a cure for them assuming there is interest to cure them, pharm companies might not want a cure to keep people buying their products for their entire lives.

Which virus do you have?

My girl goes to Harvard Med school. Her response about the article:

Interesting stuff! We were just studying the Herpes family viruses and the Chicken Pox vaccine (this one was developed by a group of Japanese researchers) and I was wondering why they couldn't come up with the same thing for other Herpes viruses. We also looked at Acyclovir and other equivalent drugs and how the big problem is that these drugs only target the actively replicating viruses not the ones that lie dorment in ones cells. One recent possible therapy is to use a drug that promotes viruses to become active and then hit them with a drug like Acyclovir thereby removing the reservoir of latent virus as well. I am confused about the nanoparticle idea. Viruses have a lysogenic and a lytic phase. The lysogenic phase is the one where the virus lays dorment inside your own genome. Therefore, a drug that would bombard latent viral particles (ones that are fully incorporated into your own genome and are not actively replicating) would presumably hit your own genome as well. I am unclear as to how the drug mentioned would distinguish host from viral DNA. I think I would have to read the original paper on this one. Just doesn't make sense to me mechanistically.

It puts the lotion on its skin, and then it gets the hose again.

This is really interesting. I've been wondering about a cure or even a better treatment for cold sores for a while now. I think something like >80% of people in the US also have the virus (even though not everyone shows symptoms) so this is a huge market. I was just hoping I would be the one to discover a cure like everyone said though, it's interesting how the drug would work to only target the virus vs human cells. Hoping its successful.

I don't think I have anything, but I'm going to get tested and I'm scared shitless. I've been getting at most 2 hours of sleep a night. It's really scaring the **** out of me. It makes me want to live in a bubble actually.

feels SO bad man.

Just to make you feel better:

If you have HPV, it's ok, over 83% of sexually active adults have it at some point in their lives. In men, actually there is no test for it. You'll get genital warts, you can go to a dermotolgist to freeze them for you. Some of the members here have it, just I hope you did not do anything with them.

Over 85% of adults have HSV1 (cold sore), but you're screwed if you have HSV2 (genital herpes). Which you can get a test for.

You're pretty much ****ed if you have HIV. Which you can get a test for.

Be sure to ask your doc to get tested for bacterial infections as well like chlamydiae and gonorrhea.

Some viruses infect with skin contact, so even if you wear rubber you're at risk. Choose your partner carefully. Or just get married to a virgin.

Thanks for the comforting words lol. The thing that scares me about herpes/HIV/ anything permanent is just that, it's permanent. Sure it could lay dormant but I would hate to transfer that to someone. I wonder if you have a cold sore and touch it by accident then take a leak and touch your dick if you will get HSV-1 down there.

No need to wonder. HSV2 and HSV1 sites can infect each other within the same person.

I had a full STD test today. I'm waiting for the results. I had to pee in a bottle post-test and my D still hurts like crazy but apparently that's normal and the pain is passing.

im not saying my kill list is massive, I'm actually pretty conservative when it comes to sleeping around. I think the more I think about it, the less I want to have sex with strangers. The stress is not worth the pleasure so I usually make the utilitarian decision.

That's a good way to reduce your chances of getting STDs. Or you can stick with anal, it's pretty safe lol
