Well I got everything unbolted from the old motor except for the tranny and exhaust. Looks like a big messy pile of stuff but it is all labeled. Any tips before I head under the car?
Here is a pic of the used heart soon to be transplanted. Just looking over the used motor I am amazed at how clean it is inside the coolant hard lines and thermostat housing. Even the exhaust and intakes ports have little to no dirt and carbon build-up.
It came from Bavarian BMW Parts in Rancho Cordova, CA, which is probably the same place. No it did not come with an intake or OFH. I was aware that it would be an almost bare bones engine and went that route instead of buying one of their complete engines. I figured since I will be transferring over a lot of new parts from my old engine that this route made more sense for me. Plus I wanted to go through every single wire, coolant and vacuum hose in the old engine.
Looks clean. Make sure you keep crud out of the opening where the OFH goes. I have seen it theorized that a bit of dirt in there can cause VANOS problems. Good luck.

Here is a photo of the old engine. This area is located right at the head and engine block on the passenger side. I'm guessing this is where my head cracked or the gasket let go. Thoughts?

Tips:
take lots of pictures before you take items apart or disconnect things.
label everything.
put nuts, bolts, screws, and any miscellaneous item in a container and mark it.
again, take pics.
Go, slow, steady, and takes breaks.
Good luck, and I applaude you for tackling this DIY.
Good job.
BeMyWhip...I labeled and bagged everything before pulling the engine. I'm just waiting on a buffer stop coming from Germany that I order over a week ago. As soon as it gets here I will begin installing the new motor.
I had time today to attach the new engine to the tranny as well as put on the headers, support brackets, transmission cooler lines, and starter. Will attempt to install it back into the car tomorrow morning.
Cool. You have a nice little shop there.
Few questions. ..
how much was a replacement engine... about?
And how easy/ hard did the bolts, nuts, studs, etc come apart?
any challenging items?
I wouldn't call it a shop. Just my tiny garage with the basic tools, cherry picker, and an air compressor that I use to air up tires. Everything has come apart really easily except for the crankshaft bolt that broke on the refurbished engine. The crankshaft sensor bolt head snapped right off when I tried to remove the broken sensor, so I had to drill it out and time-sert it.

If your talking about the upper radiator hose that thing came with the engine. I just left it on there for grip so I could manhandle the engine into position. I have all new coolant hoses going back into the car.
I can't believe how much higher the new engine sits with new motor mounts installed. The old engine was actually laying on the front axle support and rubbing against the stop buffer. I can actually get my hand in between the engine and front axle support now as well as between the oil pan and stop buffer.
Nice progress. I didn't realize the engine tilts that much until I saw it stripped down like that. Reminds me of the old Dodge "slant-six", but we won't go there. Keep the updates coming.
Engine install is complete. It still needs fluids and I'm charging the battery overnight before starting it for the first time. I need to research how much coolant is required for a completely dry engine. Fingers crossed no SES codes on first start up.

Awesome job! Thats like the final exam  and you passed.
