Red face Looking for Home Defense Handgun

I am in the market for a new handgun. It's been a while since I've picked one up so I am looking for some advice. The intended use of the gun is for home defense. At the top of my list of requirements is that it be easy to use, reliable and accurate. With regards to price, something like an HK would be out of my reach. That said, I am not looking to take shortcuts on quality to appease my price requirements.

I think a .45 would be too powerful. I don't want to risk punching a hole through my wall and hitting an unintended target in the event I would need to protect my home.

However, I am concerned that a 9x19 would lack enough power to immediately put someone down in the event I don't get a clean shot.

I would also like the flexibility to be able to attach a tactical light.

I've read good things about Glock and Sig Sauer, but don't know which models to focus on. Or if I should be focusing on other brands like Ruger or S&W. Any guidance would be lovely or pointing me to a good source would be just as great.

I tried convincing the misses of picking an AR-15 in addition, but she wasn't amused. I wore her down on the gun, so only a matter of time for the AR-15.

I'd say get the largest caliber you are comfortable firing. Handgun bullets don't just always fly through a target. Hit them in the chest until they fall down. A bigger bullet might take less shots and thus potentially save your life if they are running at you with a knife.

Go to a range and rent a variety to see what you like to shoot and how you shoot each. Some prefer striker fired and others like hammer.

Also consider if you like the idea of an manual safety or those that have internal / integrated safeties.

Calibers are all about equal in terms of ballistic performance, so choose the one that you shoot best. I'm slowly getting to all 9mm. More capacity in most cases in the same size frame when compared to larger calibers. That being said, I do have other calibers at my disposal.

I'm a fan of Glock and Springfield XDM (not XD, personal preference). Sig and S&W are also great...just depends which suits you best.

Looking for Home Defense Handgun

I got a nice cheap S&W SD9 for the same purpose, home defense. All in all for the price it's a great gun. In your case look at the SD40 model if you're worried about the stopping power even though the SD9 is good enough with the right ammo. Great price, very reliable I haven't had a jam yet after 500 rounds, and it will shoot any ammo no problem. If you'd like a nice carry and home gun then I'd go with a S&W m&p40 compact but that's just my two cents.

My HD weapon. Seems to fit your criteria perfectly. Paid $399, it's made from a VERY reputable company, bigger than 9 but smaller than .45.

Springfield XD40 sub-compact.

well, in the event that you do shoot and miss, both cals are likely to over penetrate so it really doesn't matter. even though the .45 is the larger round, I wouldn't count on it to "immediately put someone down". there are a lot of HD 9mm that are just as capable of adequately defending yourself as a .45.

just shoot what you are most comfortable shooting.

if anything you would probably be better off with an ar for home defense from a penetration standpoint. tell your wifey that.

There's a lot of good information on here about 45 vs 40 vs 9 and make sure you do plenty of research. There are amazing self defense rounds for 9mm/40 and 45. If you shoot somebody dead on with a good 9mm SD round it will put them down better then hitting somebody in the arm or leg with a .45. Shot placement is most important and there is no such thing as stopping power. There is a lot of research to do and consider with different Self defense rounds though.

Some good information in here

great post here:

If HK is out of your price range then Sig will be also. I love my p226 but it's around the same price as an HK USP 9 tactical/HK45 tactical

Guns I would recommend you going to try and shoot that are all under $700
Glock 17/19
S&W M&P 9
Springfield XDm 9
FN FNX 9

The Glock or M&P would be my first choice in 9mm if I was buying 1 handgun for self defense personally in that price range.

More expensive but great also IMO is
Sig 229
Sig 226
HK USP 9
HK p2000

Yea, TLR-3. Fits perfectly, but I'm not running into warehouses SWAT style either. I did some research, and people seemed to like Streamlight.

Are you limiting yourself to just a handgun? Ever considered a shotgun? Surprised nobody has brought that up yet.

I considered it, but would prefer the maneuverability of a pistol and the ability to free up one hand without compromising my ability to aim.

As for everyone else, thank you for your feedback thus far. It's definitely given me somewhere to start.

go to a range and see what suits you.

Def try out a Taurus Judge

I like the idea of spread from a 410 and the reliability of a revolver in a "O shit, someones in my house" scenario. Ive honestly never shot one or seen what they do on paper so other guys might be better to talk to about it.

Judge is a novelty more than anything else. Decent snake gun for a hunter/camper.

I've got a glock 21 that lives in my night stand. I've also got several different handguns that I carry, including a P226, XD40 sc, XD-S, and now a Colt 1911.

But bottom line, nothing is coming close to replacing the glock. I really, really love it.
