Looking at a 2001 M3

Considering buying a 2001 M3 convertable 6 speed. Has 115,000 miles and price is pretty resonable cause the guy is on timeline to sell. Friend of his works and mechanics shop so he has very little records. What should i look for? known problems? what should i ask he has had done?

thanks
dj

Make certain the recall for the rod bearings was done, and then pay to have a thorough PPI performed. Pay attention to wear and tear. Even a well-maintained car will go through brake pads, rotors, tires, dampers, and clutches. Check engine mounts and suspension bushings, as they are normal wear and tear items that may need to be replaced. Check top operation, along with the condition of the canvas. The drop top can last a very long time if properly maintained. Careless owners who run their verts through automatic car washes will always suffer premature wear, as the canvas is not supposed to be cleaned with car wash shampoo, or slathered in wax.

I would check the car out thoroughly by a dealership or certified BMW shop. How much is the asking price?

A guy in a hurry to sell - and it has no records because a friend of his works in a shop? I'd approach that with care.

How about receipts for parts over the years. The shop didn't throw them in for free.

If it isn't on paper - it never happened.

Be careful with this one bro!

I did a valve adjustment for a guy recently, it was ebay purchase, the PO never used TWS oil, and not very often... the entire valve train was BLACK! It was so bad a valve adjustment was impossible as the rocker arms were seized to the rods...

Here's a pic...

And here's one done last week, car I think has 78k miles, purchased from another M3 Enthusiast... found on the forum, with 7500 mile TWS intervals...

Just like Alan said, have him produce receipts for the parts... Hell, every maintenance item I ever purchased is on record at either Turner, Tischer, ECS, or AutohausAZ...

Good luck in your search bro!

Oh, good thing with 2001's, I've never seen one with broken Vanos Exhaust hub tabs, or loose intake bolts....

M3 Vert with a 6 speed, 115k mileage, and he's willing to take under 10k? Run from this. Fast, and far away. Unless you have another 10k+ to put back into it to fix all the wrongs.

If the top works and he can prove some maintenance. I'd go for it. But u wouldn't be surprised if like the vanos tab is broken or something crazy.

But people get desperate man. Look into it more.

So he is sticking to his 10k number now. Is it worth 10k. Would rather have a coupe but still do see any going that low.

If you'd rather have a coupe, buy a coupe. It'll be a 10k regret, that's all it will be to you. Pass and find a documented coupe or at least one that doesn't seem shady.

Holy ****, that's not bad, a little high mileage but hey that price is awesome, I paid 12k for mine that is virtually stock with springs and 30k less miles. I would have jumped on that if it was local.

High mileage? Don't forget that the car is 12 years old. 115K miles translates to under 10K per year.

I'm talking about the craigslist post. The OP vert in question isn't bad at all, mines an 02' with 107k like, 8916 miles a year lol.
