Is the Victor Reinz gasket really as bad as I've heard? I've got a brand new VR gasket waiting to be installed but will order a different brand if it sucks that bad.

You be the judge. Many here have installed the dreaded VR and within 5-8000 miles their engines start to leak oil at the gasket. Is that enough life from a gasket until you have to replace it again? (with all the concomitant labor)
An oil leak on our engines is not a casual thing. For example the small leak on my engine was dripping down on my lower rad hose. Hot oil on rubber ate into my hose and necessitated replacement to avoid failure of that eventually. The rad hose has already stared to bubble and crack under the dried oil.

What will you do?

I had been getting those codes prior to and after replacing VCG, but I replaced the fuel filter and they disappeared.

Now I'm getting "cylinder 1 misfire" (or something to this effect). The crack is in the vicinity of cylinder 1 (which I'm assuming is the forward-most cylinder), so I'm wondering if there any be a small amount of oil seeping into the spark plug/coil area. The engine stutters a bit for a few seconds after starting it cold, then it smooths out. Will see what it looks like when I install the new valve cover. I suppose it could be a bad plug, all six of which I replaced e VCG.

I had a VR on mine that I think the PO had put in. It leaked. I've never heard anything good about the VR VCG.
