Photography Challenge 130: Duotone Images

Here was the problem:

  3. Select all and copy.
  4. Create new layer... make it solid teal color.
  5. Edit in Quick Mask Mode (Q).
  6. Paste.
  7. Exit Quick Mask Mode (Q).
  8. Fill selection with peach color.
Topic: Duotone Images
DUOTONE is a halftone reproduction of an image using the superimposition of one contrasting colour halftone (traditionally black) over another color halftone. This is most often used to bring out middle tones and highlights of an image.

Courtesy of ride365 I thought this topic would following suit of our last challenge that included a post-processing technique, which seemed to draw a lot of positive feedback. This challenge will test your ability to work with levels and your ability to balance darks and lights. It will also test you on pairing colors together that may or may not help to portray your subject matter. And black and white DO count for this challenge if you see fit.

Here is my personal quick attempt at it (I work for The Topps Company so I just grabbed one of our images I had on hand).

DUOTONE_TUTORIAL

TIPS: Make the background color dark (teal in this case) as it will take the place of the blacks in your image and make the color you fill (after you exit Quick Mask Mode) light.

This is going to be a tougher topic, but give it a shot..!

Even though I backwards-engineered this process, I refined my version somewhat so that I have more control. Basically the setup is...
  • top layer - "highlight" color with layer mask. the layer mask is your grayscale image.
  • bottom layer - "shadow" color.

For each layer, use a Solid Color adjustment layer. That way you can easily adjust with different colors and see the changes in real time. Then select the layer mask and adjust that using levels or curves to tweak the result, also in real time.

I know that sounds confusing, but some of you will understand.

I'm not concerned about the contest. I'm providing info for anyone who might be interested in the process.

Edit: I see where you might be confused, since I attached files. However they weren't meant to be entries, as there are 2 of them and they're about as big as a business card.

The key to a successful topic on this forum is choosing something people already have photos of. Unlike on an actual photography forum, no one here will create or shoot specifically to meet a challenge. Make the topic "creative self portraits" or "bokeh" and watch the thread blow up.

Exactly but the way you worded that is kind of condescending.

"real" photography forums are just full of gear heads. I seriously doubt any real photographers would devote their valuable time to shoot for a forum challenge? I definitely know I wouldn't.

However, I'm always happy to add something I've taken on my own time and of my own volition to the mix.
