M3 SQ Focal Utopia Demo Car Build

Not sure if you guys would be interested but thought I would post it up any way as it might help some one with a future build.

At work we are currently building the M3 as a bit of a demo car for customers to listen to a high end SQ sound system that is integrated to look completely OEM.

The car currently has the factory 12 speaker HK sound system with the non navigation screen and we shall be upgrading it to the following:

- Focal Utopia 165 W-RC components in the front doors
- Focal Utopia 8" subwoofer in a custom carpeted enclosure underneath the parcel shelf to replace the factory 6x9s
- Focal FPS 4 channel amplifier
- Audison Bit one signal processor with remote hidden in ash tray
- Focal B.A.M acoustic material in the front doors and sub enclosure
- Focal Elite wiring throughout
- Dynavin D99+ headunit

The rest of the speakers shall be disconnected so we only have the front doors. For a SQ car this is all that is required and will also be easier to tune with the Audison Bit Tune software and better staging shall be achieved.

So if any of you guys are interested let me know and I shall keep posting photos of the build. Any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them.

Thank you

Phil

M3 SQ Focal Utopia Demo Car Build

I thought Dynavin had a bad reputation for SQ? Or does the processor help with that?

I really like the simplicity, only needing front speakers with a parcel shelf sub, instead of speakers hidden in every orifice.

I presume the other 2 channels are for the sub voice coils!?

I am a fan of Focal gear. you get what you pay for.

Yep processor will fix that. A proper Alpine/Pioneer double DIN would be better but I don't like the way in which you have to fit them and we also want to keep everything looking factory as vehicles these days are all about OEM integration. 75% of people wouldn't even known the Dynavin is aftermarket.

Good thing about the dynavin is it will give us proper RCA output instead of having to use speaker level input off of the factory headunit. And I will get a CD player inside the car instead of the stacker in the boot! Haha.

Yep nice and simple. The least amount of source points the easier it is to get proper staging and SQ. You are correct, 2 channels for the speakers and the other 2 for the subwoofer. Focal gear really is excellent. I have a Focal home audio system and love it to death.

Technically 5 (two tweeters, two mid range drivers and one subwoofer).

But yes in essence one pair

For sound quality in a car such as the M3 this is all that is required for SQ to get a proper full range. If we were wanting to show off surround sound in the vehicle than definitely would do rear speakers.

Finally, someone in car audio understands staging is a 2 point source system.

My home audio stereo speakers have Focal drivers, and my son uses Focal drivers & amps in his car. it really is good gear.

Bring on the build pics.

This sounds interesting. But what is "SQ"?

How much would the proposed set up cost inc. installation?

SQ just stands for sound quality.

I'll add the cost up tomorrow for you.
