On the hunt for an E46 M3

Hi all, I have been browsing the forums for quite some time now and I think it's time to jump the bandwagon and join the E46 M3 Club (even though my wallet says otherwise).

I have done a lot of reading and most issues concern the SMG pump failure and rear subframe issues.

I have shortlisted a few cars and spoken to the owners but would like your opinions also.

1. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...1109571/?Cr=11
2002 Red M3. Only has 80000kms, so it seems quite low for the price advertised. The owner has service manuals but has not replaced the SMG pump or had any 'issues' with the rear subframe. It's also been on sale for a while now. Pros: Im a fan of red with black interior. Cons: The owner replaced the stock M3 intake with a K&N?

2. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...2054145/?Cr=15
Another 02 Red M3. I havn't talked to the owner yet.

3. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...2053501/?Cr=16
Im not a fan of "track ready", but I have been in conversation with the owner. The car was unregistered for a while, but had to go through RWC for VIC (as the owner moved from there) where a whole lot of parts were replaced. The SMG pump has been replaced (with a second hand unit) and the subframe reinforced. It also has a 200pt pre purchase inspection done by BM Tech. Unfortunately the car has no service records as it was broken into. It also has a dint on the passenger guard (shouldnt be too hard to fix?). All the work for the car has been done at BM tech or BM autoworks while in his ownership. It also has that lovely sounding exhaust.

I wouldn't base the decision too much on the SMG pump being replaced. It seems as though the longevity of that particular part is hit and miss. If its a significant deciding factor, maybe you should consider a manual variant instead.

I would want one with a good service history that is demonstrated with legitimate books and reputable bmw specialist stamps within it. That will assist you greatly when you decide to move it on.

A properly installed sub-frame reinforcement kit would be a plus, although i'd have it checked thoroughly to make sure it is being effective and not band-aiding a prevalent crack.

I would also aim for an update car (late 2003 or whatever - someone will correct me if i am wrong).

Best of luck with your search.

I wouldn't even bother with an SMG M3... The failure rate is too high. Sure the failures on those pumps is hit or miss, but from the research I've seen it's inevitable. And only hit or miss with specific owners not on the pumps themselves. Can't imagine getting in my car everyday and having to worry if this was the day my SMG pump fails. Get a manual transmission!

I like the part of your post where you base it on no factual information.

My factual information is being a BMW tech for several years and also looking on numerous forums about this very subject smart guy... Trying to help the dude out so he doesn't get a nice M3 and then have a $3k bill shortly after when it all could be avoided.

I would go for this one: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-2139177/?Cr=3

That is if you want a manual. Looks unmolested and it is in pretty good condition. Owner would probably take 40k for it now.

I notice also there are a few modified M3s on there. Not surprised to see they haven't left carsales for a few months!

I've been eyeing off that first one for a while now, didn't realize he was down to 30k. Sucks to sell a car at the moment.

lol, based on research, the actual number of smg pumps failing is very low.

the cause of the failure though is unknown (much speculation), so technically, it can happen quite suddenly.

I wouldn't worry about the whole SMG pump failure thing. If it happens, it happens. I have happily being enjoying mine for the last 6 months and don't regret it at all. Drive one and see if you like it.

Still on the hunt for an M3.
I may keep the Soarer also, as it holds lots of sentimental value.

I don't mind taking this slowly also.

I have had a SMG for 4 years now and never had a problem with it. They use to be a fortune (I.e. new from BMW) but now there are places that offer re-ferb units for less than $1,000. Given a set of tires is well over that and inspection 2 is around that, its nothing more than an expense these days that should not be worried about....

The SMG is a great option in my view. Take one for a test drive and you will either love it or hate it. I would never go back to a manual having had one.
