I'm honestly shocked that some people don't know what Uncle Tom means. no one made this argument when everyone jumped on Nader when he made an "Uncle Sam, or Uncle Tom" comment after Obama won in 2008.

What? No, Nader was questioning whether Obama would cave and cater to corporate interests just like the rest. He said, will Obama be an Uncle Sam or an Uncle Tom and Shep Smith went apesh!t on him

No. One inarticulate dude on a sports show using a phrase that even the other sports reporters needed defined for them does not constitute the "modern" version of the phrase.

Didn't you have to read Uncle Tom's Cabin in high school?

This guy 100% knew what it meant. Never mind his age and his (alleged) education, the very fact that a Democrat directed it at the sole black member of SCOTUS for ruling in a way that doesn't match the Dem's agenda would indicate a STAGGERING coincidence.

He's just another hypocritical politician that showed his true colors (harhar) when he got off script and now he's lying to try to weasel his way out of it.

Fire. Them. All.

I didn't have to read it either. I just happened to read it on my own.

I didn't have to read it either. I'm of the younger generation and had no idea what it meant until more recently.

I thought you lived in Alabma for a while. Also there was enough info during the Clarence Thomas appointment that most anyone following politics would know the meaning.

Have you heard of cracker before?

How do politicians and teachers get away with saying racist remarks, but someone like Paula Dean uses the n word back in 2007 and she's blasted off TV, from Target, etc.

I spent close to two decades in the South having lived in Chapel Hill, Memphis, New Orleans and Gainesville. But I also lived in communities where racism wasn't really a common place. In fact, it was frowned upon. And I was too young to haven taken note or even shown interest regarding Clarence Thomas's appointment back in '91.

And yes, I've heard the term cracker used.

Edit: In regards to your Paula Dean statement. I think the reaction by the media and sponsors was blown out of proportion. They're using her as a launching pad to address a much larger issue. I think it's unfair to her.

Most everyone who has spent some time in the south, knows what a redneck, cracker, honky and uncle tom refers to.

Something you said 6 years ago can be used against you, no matter what you are like today. that's BS.

I've lived in NY my entire life, I've known what an uncle tom was since I was a kid. This is basic history stuff, wow.

They stopped teaching it these days probably. Everything is about equality, fairness, and coexistence in schools.

No.

That being said, personal feelings of Mr. Thomas aside, a rude racially charged comment like this has no place in politics. I'd just as upset (but not as surprised) if a republican did it.

Not sure what you're ranting about, so simmer down your jimmies and try and glue a coherent sentence together.
