School me on the Audi A6

So my mother stumbled across what appears to be a pretty good deal on a used Audi A6. Guy is asking just over $3000 for what appears to be a high mileage but very well maintained vehicle. Here are the specs....

2001 Audi A6 Quattro 2.7T
187,000 miles

I haven't seen the car yet but according to the seller the only known issues are... a small coolant leak from the radiator... and a small oil leak. The radiator doesn't bother me but the oil leak does. He told my mother that he thinks it could be an oil filter leak or engine seal. Engine seal sent red lights off for me. He says he changes teh oil every 3000 miles with full synthetic and that he has to top off oil about once a month due to the leak.

For the price it would be a great daily driver for me... since I can just fix everything myself and have a second car to fall back on. But my mother needs something reliable. She's great with keeping up on maintenance but completely clueless when it comes to anything car related.

SO, what do you guys think? Are these vehicles reliable... do the turbos go out often... trannys... etc?

1.) Stay away from anything Audi with over 20,000 miles. My cousin has a 2.7t with 160k and in the past 5 years I don't think I've ever seen that car run right/without a CEL.
2.) That's a big oil leak.

You can find something better. I'm sure of it.

^My Audi has been a **** ton more reliable than my E46 was... True story

Tiptronic or 6MT? If he's on the stock K03 turbos, those things are a ticking time bomb... And when they go, that means a motor pull. Unless you know where the oil leak is actually coming from, skip.

They're reliable until something breaks. As is any car with 187,000 miles. But can you really trust a guy who changes his oil every 3,000 miles when it's synthetic?

False... A stage 1-2 K03ed 2.7t can hit 280-300 wheel with the right bolt ons and tune, and the motor itself is rock solid if maintained well.

Thanks for the help guys. Although I'm not too familiar specifically with Audis I have had a bit of experience with VWs and had similar sentiments... rolling piles of ____.

Again, the car would be for my mother so reliability is key here and this sounds anything but.

Audi's are pretty but seems to be the most problematic of all the German brands. Once it's out of warranty, things start to break, once that happens, it's a money pit. I wouldn't touch an Audi with 50K miles let alone one over 100K.

Stay away from C5s, way more complex and prone to issues than any BMW.

Run. Running is a more reliable form of transportation than that Audi.

Stay the heck away from that car! My MIL had one, total POS and repairs were dang spendy. Finally blew up on her with 120k miles or so.

I wouldn't buy any German car in the $3k range for a reliable daily driver. Buy Japanese in that price range if you want it to be reliable. My wife's last car was a Mazda 6, dang near indestructible and she did not take good care of it.

I also came in here to tell you to not buy that car. Any Audi with that many miles is just asking for trouble let alone a turbo A6 that's leaking coolant and oil.

Thanks bud!

Yea, it took me forever to find one in pearl white. Glad I stuck it out though and didn't settle.

Additionally, one of my very good friends had an A6 2.7T for at least 5 years. I rode in the car once. It was in his driveway for about 4 of those years due to x, y and z being consistently broken.
