How many sway bars ARE there?

Pardon my E46 ignorance....but I've only been under this thing once or twice:

Are there front AND a rear sway bars?

I had a sound coming from the front end last year that sounded like wooden spoons banging around inside a steel pot....mostly when driving over imperfections in road surface.

I could hear it on things as small as manhole covers and tar strips, but crossing multiple train-tracks, of course, it sounded like an entire percussion section letting loose!

My neighbourhood garage guy told me it was worn out swaybar links....so I picked some up at NAPA. I believe they had good/better/best and I went middle of the road....and all was good.

Now, however, I have the same sound....but it seems to be coming from the rear this time.

So, do these links exist at all four corners of the car? How often do they go? If one goes, should both (or all four, if there are 4) be done?
Recommended source/brand? (without going exotic)

Thanks,
Michael

Hello Michael,

There are two sway bars found on our & most vehicles. There is the front sway bar which you have already seen and or replaced the sway bar links. There is also a rear sway bar and it is similar to the the front sway bar (except in size / diameter). The rear sway bar also has bushings and sway bar links that wear out like the front.

You can check them for slop or loose links to make sure the links are the source of your sound. A lot of of sponsors carry these parts at decent to high prices depending on the make / quality.

Just to name a few. Good luck!

Thanks, Nick.

I'll snoop around and see what's available.

Probably I'll end up buying from a US source, have them shipped to my Niagara Falls, NY, mailing address and just pop across the border to get them.

Stuff up here (from milk to Maguires) is often up to twice as expensive. Thank goodness you 300 million+ create a more "efficient" market that is close at hand. (Imagine if we ALL had to order our parts from Europe!? We'd be screwed!)

Thanks, again.
