Might be a dumb question (shooting into trash can)

Im trying to diagnose a misfire with my saiga 308 (having light primer strikes). I think I may have found the issue but I need to Drimel on the hammer a little bit. My dilemma is that I need to drive for 20min for test fires.

Here's the question....

Is it safe to put a hole in the bottom of one of those plastic shop trashcans (aprox 40 gallon) lean it on an embankment and fire a few rounds in to the ground? Im trying to work the hammer a little and do some test fires without having my neighborhood think WW3 is starting (I don't live in the city limits so no legality's with discharging a firearm).

Am I missing some safety issues here? Is the ATF going to break down my door for making a illegal suppressor?

If I'm a complete idiot I'll leave the flame suit in the closet.

A trash can isnt going to suppress the noise

Might even make it louder

If your area allows discharge, who cares?

You should be fine... I used to test shoot into a pile of grass clippings in my back yard. You're cool!

.308 is so fu*king loud compared my .22 or any of my hand guns. I wouldnt have a problem with those, Im just trying to be courteous.

I would have thought it would knock the noise down tremendously, thinking along the lines of this:

*built these because of noise complaints apparently

if you can shoot from inside your house out a window or back door(from the center of the room) to your target area that would dampen the sound of the shot for your neighbors.

(don't listen to me.)

Not attached to the weapon, so not a suppressor I don't think. Honestly, I don't expect it to make a difference at all though and .308 isn't exactly quiet. I'll think about this a bit...

Also, more details are needed regarding that tank suppressor looking thing

It's a suppressor for 155mm artillery.

Re: Might be a dumb question (shooting into trash can)

You can look into subsonic ammo, light hand loads, or possibly drop the hammer on a shell case with a primer and no bullet or powder. That would be a mild pop. (Thinking out loud)

Edit:and technically wouldn't be shooting because no projectile.

lol the silencer did the work. Shooting in to a can like that is only going to make it louder.

Do you have a basement? One that is backed by dirt? Just knock a hole in the wall....

The house will muffle most of the noise of .308.

I always see them shooting through a pillow in the movies, and the old lady next door is no wiser. It must be true.

Why not just take the bullet out of the case and place casing in by hand. You should be able to tell if primers getting struck properly or not without all that noise.

Might be on to something....

As far as just using primers, the first shot seems to always go off its the second or third shoot that misfires. I would need to try this while its autoloading.

Im going to try to fill the trash can up with some pillows and old blankets and give it a try.

Something like this just not attached to the weapon

Well....

"Its probably" SO quiet for a .308

Shot about 12 rounds, one could pack a trash can with insulation and blankets with a hole down the middle but I'm not going to risk it. I took it shooting at my parents place, had one light strike after a mag change but its a hell of a lot better than it was. Back to the bench it goes.

I think that might be considered nfa even though its ghetto rigged. No one would know of you did it once but don't post about it.

Wow, that's actually pretty damn amazing!

This is very grey for me, and I would caution you in the extreme regarding this thing. This is the definition of a silencer, per the ATF:

Quote:
The terms “firearm silencer” and “firearm muffler” mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.
The weapon is portable; it doesn't say the silencer has to be. And it is a device designed specifically "for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report" of the firearm. The thing is, I think those bullet traps may muffle the report of the weapon a bit. Not sure though...I would seriously consider discontinuing the use of this thing, destroying it, and deleting all videos, photos, etc. of it. It's not worth it.

Yea I was looking at a few other forums where gun ranges (private and public were using tires and other baffles to quiet the concussions, people were saying that as long as it wasn't attached to the gun it wasn't considered an NFA item but definitely don't want to risk it... I

I saw a thing where people were screwing on oil filters via an adaptor that's made and then shooting through it
