Is It possible to replace just the Outer Ball Joint?

Just found out that my front lower outer ball joint went bad. The PO had replaced the entire lower control arm assembly right before I bought the car, which is about 8 months ago. He must have bought some cheap control arms off Fleasbay or something like that... Anyways, is it possible to replace just the lower outer ball joint instead of the entire lower control arm? I see that some online places sells just the ball joint.

How much work would it be just replacing just the outer ball joint??

Thank you,

Jay

Re: Is It possible to replace just the Outer Ball Joint?

On some aftermarket control arms like the Meyle HD you can replace the ball joints, but if what you have is like the OEM you can't; you have to replace the entire arm. If it is a cheap part like you suspect that might be a better idea anyway. Get yourself a pair of Meyle HD and know you have good parts.

You can change just an outer ball joint in OE and aftermarket Meyle control arms. The hard part is pressing out the old one and pressing in the new one without removing the control arm from the car. Whacking a pickle fork in near the inner ball joint to yank the control arm can result in a torn boot requiring replacement. I have seen an E36 specific ball joint tool for removal/replacement on the car but not an E46 tool.
