Plastic Shields Under the Car

Hi All:

I have a 2004 325 xiT (wagon) and am missing all of the plastic shielding protecting the underside of the car.

I have done significant research and was able to determine that the front shield is p/n 51718265977 and the center shield is p/n 51718265927. Here is the link to the realoem site: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...1&fg=70&hl=162

What I am confused about is whether there is a third shield in the back of car and, if so, what is the p/n? I saw p/n 51717028893 on realoem and other sites, but I cannot tell if it is part of the plastic shielding package on the bottom of the car. In this connection, p/n 51717028893 weighs over 20 lbs and costs about $400, which is leading me to believe that it is not part of the shielding.

Can anyone help to shed some light on this situation? Specifically, is there a third shield in the back of the car? I don't want to spend $400 on p/n 51717028893 only to find out that it is not the correct part.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, there is a third shield. Front one covers the radiator area, middle one the motor/oil pan and rear (third) one covers the transmission/transfer case. Was under my '03 iX wagon yesterday to swap an axle.

Can't help with the P/Ns. Agree, that's a lot of $$ for an underpanel.

There are three, the best place to get them from is a junkyard or hit up some used part sites. Don't buy them new if you can avoid it.

Part numbers:
Front of car: 51718265977
Middle: 51718265927
Rear of car: 51717028893

I assure you they do not weigh anywhere close to 20lbs but they might be quoting shipping weight which is a lot heavier especially for a box of that size.

Sam- realoem is wrong. That's not the correct part number for the shield under the TC.

This is the kind of thing that I would consider shopping junkyards for.

They are going to get scraped and bashed up anyway, and nobody sees them. I would try to avoid paying full dollar for these. Check out www.car-part.com for junkyards in your area that have an XiT in stock, then start calling them about the undertrays.

Not sure if the front 2 are the same as non AWD cars, but the rear one is not on the RWD cars as far as I know - none of the fuel filter DIYs mention removing it, which you have to on our cars.

I have been running without mine for 6 months / 20,000 miles without any negative impacts. You might try just leaving them off because nobody sees them anyway.

None of the shielding would weigh 20lbs, it is quite light.

I'd sell you mine but I need to keep it because if I ever sell the car the next owner will likely be asking for it.

I spoke extensively with my mechanic yesterday and believe that we figured out the correct part numbers for the three plastic shields on the underside of the e46 xi models (including tourings):

Front Shield: 51718265977 (approx. $100 w/online discounts)
Center / Middle Shield: 51718265927 (approx. $100)
Rear Shield: 51718265985 (approx. $50)

I greatly appreciate everyone's input, suggestions and varying points of view relative to the utility of and need for the plastic shieldings. From best I can tell, the front shielding protects from debris getting into the engine and also helps with the car's aerodynamics. The middle shield helps to protect the oil pan and nearby components, especially when the car bottom outs over speed bumps, etc. From my perspective, the front and middle shields serve important purposes and are worthy of replacement. The rear shield does not seem as important, although for an extra $50 why not finish the job and keep the underside of the car protected.

Ebay and local junkyards are great ideas and I will explore both of these before buying new OEM replacements.

Thanks all!!!

Highjacking your tread a little bit

I'm having trouble finding the correct fasteners for my shields...
I orded these and they where correct:
Quick-release screw 07147177492
Circlip PA66 D=12 51718212163 (This was only a plastick washer)

But I can't find (and neither can the stealership) the correct c-clips for the quick release screws.

Is it number 8 or 11 here?
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...1&fg=70&hl=162

Can someone help?
