Texas' Looming Hispanic Shift Explained In 2 Charts

In interesting bit from NPR that I think is emblematic of some of the serious demographic challenges facing the GOP not only in TX, but nationally. The GOP has made a lot of hay about the need to broaden their demographic base, especially amongst Hispanics. However, I think these broader aspirations/needs are running up against more parochial local GOP political realities as is evidenced by the lukewarm (at best) support for immigration reform bill in Congress.

"Within a decade, Hispanics are projected to eclipse non-Hispanic whites as the largest race or ethnic group in Texas. It's a development that could someday shift the state's — or, given the size of Texas, even the nation's — politics..."

Interesting stuff. Besides an influx of a certain subset of minorities, younger folks are more enlightened because of the internet, social media. That's an obstacle for the GOP. Moving away from Religious based decision making is one thought to move them into the 21st century.

I don't think this is as big of an issue as you think it is. Statewide Texas officials have a history of being very friendly and respectful towards Latinos in Texas, even the illegal ones. With their growing economic and political clout, Latinos will be increasingly co-opted and integrated within the Republican Party. Who knows, maybe 20 years from now they'll be considered just another sub-demographic of white racial descent.

Rubio's polling with Hispanics only rose 1% with all this pro-immigration bill nonsense...just like every other republican that tries this. They're voting democrat, no matter what. The sooner you understand this the better.

How so ? I get my wild salmon fajita mix at my co-op and it's prepared by white and azn people.

I heard the same piece and it still amazes me republicans want to stay the course in terms of social agenda. They're going wipe themselves out of any legitimate presidential race. Why Texas may be a blue state by next election.

The real question is - how much longer will TX conservatives be able to gerrymander districts to create GOP majorities?

I was making a joke, Joseph Maturo (Mayor in CT) made a similar comment a while back.

Ya'll under estimate just how conservative the state of Texas is. Most of these hispanics are being raised with conservative views and values.
While the southern counties may be blue, their average voter turn out is rather small.

Tejas is already blue, the Republicans just gerrymander to keep them in office.
