Power steering problem!

Hey guys, so I have 2002 325xi and about a week ago I heard a moaning sound when turning my steering wheel all the way to the left. I then shut the car off and check my left wheel well and saw oil or some dark liquid dripping from the rod that connects the rim. I don't know what it is, but if anyone has had a similar problem and has fixed please let me know! It's also kind of hard to turn the wheel and it's my first e46 so I don't know how other people's cars steering turn compared to mine. My infinitys wheel can turn with one finger and it's extremely easy to turn it's steering. I know if that's how e46 wheels turn. Thanks for help out and if you need pics, I can provide them!

E46 steering is heavy by nature. If the "oil" that you're seeing is thick, my guess is that your axle boot is torn and what you're seeing is grease leaking from in there. If this is the case, you will likely need a new boot and maybe axle as well.

If the oil that you're seeing is just like any other oil, you probably have a leaking PS line that needs replacing. Plenty of DIY's on here for both issues should you want to tackle either yourself.

Re: Power steering problem!

Thanks! I'll look into the oil problem. It doesn't seem thick, it's just dark and i saw it dripping. Probably the power steering needs to be overhauled. I'll see if I can get it to my indy this month. I'll just drive it as it is for now and I'll check the reservoir to see if any oils in there. Its raining so I'll add some pics tm

If you keep driving it and it's the axle, your cost of replacement parts goes from ~$50 to ~$300 (if the axle isn't shot already). Just FYI.
