Oil question ...

I usually use 5w-30 in my 330 but my wife went out and bought 10w30. My car needs alittle oil to be just right. is 10w30 safe to use ? Curious... I know it's a stupid question

Does either oil meet spec? Most XW30's don't (too thin, HTHS to low etc).

The 3 Series calls for 5W30 on the oil cap... At least on mine it does.

OP.... It is safe to mix different weights of oil. I would stay with the same brand and type and I wouldn't do it all the time, but it should be safe.

We know that genius, but most 5W30's don't meet spec. A 30W oil can be nearly a 20W to a 40W and everything in between. Hence my question, "does the oil chosen meet spec"?

Typo it should be Valvoline SynPower MST 5W30, not the common SynPower 5W30. It should have been fixed years ago but BMWNA are slack!

Right but I'm assuming OP is just using any old "5W-30" off the shelf, which won't meet spec.

OP: If you're just adding a little I can't see how it will really hurt much. It will mix in with the other oil. But if you've got a full oil pan of generic 5W-30 oil and not one of the five listed above, I'd do an oil change.

Really no reason not to use the "right" oil. I just was at WalMart a few days ago and they had 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 for $22 and change. I picked up a couple jugs of the 0W-40. Great deal and no excuse to get all analytical about whether something else MIGHT work because you save $5 on the cheaper stuff. Our car doesn't get a lot of mileage anyway so my oil changes can stretch easily past a year. Could probably go 2 or 3 years if I really wanted to.

Any oil brand that has the bmw LL-01 label on it is the correct oil to use. No real reason to use any other. BMW dealer oil is often the cheapest, and most recommended, but any brand will do with that LL-01 label.

Where's Jake to lock this down.

I read it as oil needed to top it off. In any case, 10W-30 is not going to break your engine. However, down the road, the short and sweet answer is to stick to anything LL-01.

I'm using Mobil 1 0W-40 at the moment. You can get two 5QT jugs for $45 at Walmart. Cheaper than BMW 5W-30 and factory approved.

It does not need to be "just right." There is an upper mark and a lower mark on the dipstick. The oil ONLY needs to be between the two marks, it does not have to be precisely at the top. When the oil level reaches the bottom mark, add a full quart, or liter depending on your market.

Yes, 10w30 is okay.

It's right across the road from Strongbow.

But, those who haven't been shopping for oil recently may not have seen the recent "rollback" prices. If I didn't already have enough oil for all of our vehicles for the next 2 years, I'd have stocked up on it.

Best prices for synthetics I've seen by a good margin. The instant I see Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40 on the shelves I will be stocking up.
