Any North Dallas fanatics on here.....

.....that could do me a huge favor. I have a feeling my MAF is bad. But before spending a couple hundred bucks on a piece that isnt returnable if not the problem, I wanted to make sure it's the MAF. Anyone that has a 1999 to 2003 3 series that could do a quick check by popping in their working MAF to see if the problem goes away. Wont take but a few minutes. I know its a long shot but figured Id ask anyway.

Well the car starts and immediately stalls when the MAF is attached, but runs fine when the MAF is unattached. Most suggestions were to look for vacuum leaks, but about 4 months I replaced the upper and lower boots, and did a whole CCV replacement including all the hoses.

OP,
What sort of issues are you experiencing?

I havent had any issue or fault codes in recent time. Last tiem was months ago when I replaced the CCV system when I had a vacuum leak (turned out it was a vent hose from the oil separator that was broken in half). SInce then it's been running fine. Yesterday I went to start it in the morning and I got as far as backing out of my parking space before it stalled. Since then it shuts off immediately after it turns over. I thought it was the Fuel pump, but I hear it whirring and of course I've found that when I unplug the MAF, it starts up and doesnt stall, so I doubt that's it. It seems to me like it's the MAF but of course it's an expensive guess if its not the problem after buying one since you cant return them.

okay..
Likely you still have a vacuum leak... however let's focus on simpler possibilities.

Replaced the spark plugs with ngk iridiums 2.5 years ago. I have cleaned it with CRC maf cleaner but Im about to clean it a second time to see if it helps. The first cleaning didnt do anything. I suppose I am due for a new air filter.

If it was a vacuum leak it'd have to be a new one. The last one was fixed. And havent had any codes since. There really arent any hoses left that can be replaced, outside of one failing. But when I did have the vacuum leak, I had the direct opposite with the MAF. When I had a leak and it was unplugged the car would shut off. It would only run with the MAF attached. In my case now it only runs with the MAF unattached.

fuel filter was done maybe 8000 mile ago so i doubt its that. Second cleaning of the MAF did nothing so i drove it over to Autozone and had the codes scanned. P0101 and P1770.

Its more than likely the maf. Mine had the same issue about 2 months ago. I replaced it with a working maf from a different car of the same year and model. problem solved.

found VDO-Siemens OEM for 230 from AutoHausAZ. Or I could try a used one just in case it isn't the MAF.
