Home protection shotgun advice

Basic story: meth head moved in next door and fixated on myself and my wife. There is some chance he's going to have a psychotic break due to the heavy drug use. In addition he has many signs of antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy).

I'm looking at purchasing a shotgun, more as a deterrent but I need something easy to use in the unfortunate event that he decides to assault one of us. The Remington 870 express I can get from Cabelas looks like a good option. Is this a good choice or are there better options? And yes, I plan on firing it before the need arises, but my only experience is with handguns and rifles so far.

the 870 is a decent shotgun, it will work.

is there any particular reason you want the shotgun for HD? why would you use it over your handguns or rifles in HD(assuming you own them)?

Remington 870 is a great gun. I have the Remington 870 Police Special with a parkerized finish, pistol grips, etc.

If someone hears you chamber a round... They will stop. If they don't, they won't hear the trigger pull.

If someone hears you chamber a round, you are doing something wrong.

That's your thought. I want someone to hear it if they are attempting to come into my house. If they continue they will have a blast!

Cool. So when they are already in the house and coming at you have fun trying to get a round chambered before they are on you.

Do you also carry without a round in the chamber?

If i hear somebody breaking in I run out to the front porch and just shoot my shotgun up into the air...that usually scares them away

If you pick it up, better Intend to use it to stop the threat.

Unless the person is experiencing auditory exclusion as a result of the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, like when people are under stress or high as kites.

But yeah, let's rack a shotgun. Under stress. Nothing bad ever happens under stress. There's no chance you will short-stroke the shotgun. There's no chance that there will be a failure to feed, and you won't need to check whether there's a round in the chamber because press-checks are just for show. Lord forbid that we'd actually want to physically verify the existence of a round in the chamber before going into a gunfight. Let's just trust that it happens and hope for the best. Murphy's Law never applies when you don't want it to, right?

That sound isn't going to mean a thing to someone experiencing a psychotic break with reality and breaking in to your house, which is apparently what OP the psychologist is worried about.

To each their own, but I prefer a handgun for close quarters.

I guess it is all what you are most familiar with.

oh god, I've literally had nightmares about failure to feeds and not being able to remedy the issue in a stressful situation.

Deterrence. Plus wife doesn't like having handguns in the home. We're in a dense neighborhood so the shorter range of a shotgun is safer for the neighbors than sending a round hundreds of feet or more.
