HELP!! What part is this??

Hi all, I recently purchased a 2004 320d Touring 150bhp that needs a little tlc. I had it up on stands to look under the rear as there is a knock when pulling off in 1st and can see cracks in all the diff mount rubbers. Another part that looks fecked and is very loose is in the attached picture, does anybody know what it's called and what it does? It looks like it is just bolted onto the diff as maybe a buffer? Is it of any actual use , if not does it matter if its replaced, cheers all

It looks like some kind of vibration dampener. That is not something I have ever seen installed on a US car.

Could this be the remains of the support bracket for the nearby tailpipe?
