Touring owners: Who has done the Bavsound Stage 1 upgrade? (HK if you got it)

Seriously mulling this over. It's really not crazy expensive for the tourings, especially since you don't get the rear bass drivers. (Not included in this kit.)

Just that the sound in my 2002 E46 Touring is absolute catbarf. It's muddy and dull and I can barely have the stereo on.

I'm fine installing speakers in doors. Plug-n-play is a no-brainer; it just takes time.

But is it worth it for a touring, and did it matter that you weren't able to replace the rears?

This thread touches on touring rear speakers a little bit, and I could do that at some point also, but would just want to start with the BSW Stage 1 kit.

So, who's done it? Happy? Worth it? Did you do something else instead? Did you also deal with the amp, or leave it as is?

I'll hang up and listen.

I do not own a touring but did the BavSound Stage one kit and it really didn't make much of a difference. It was better but not where I was trying to get to. Once I added the BavSound sub enclosure and sub amp, the entire sound system came alive. Deep, crisp and clear. Over 13 years now and still as awesome as the day I put it in.

Disclaimer: I am by no means an audio specialist but to my basic knowledge and ears, my system sounds fantastic to me.

Is that still a thing? They show subwoofers on the BavSound site, but they seem to be the under-seat ones from newer cars.

It was 13 years ago... They were even called Bavarian Sound Werks back then...

I have them installed in my '04 Touring. It was similar to you. Sounded pretty weak and muddy with the stock speakers. HK through business CD. Avin Avant 4 going in soon. I have had the BSW's in my M3 for a long time and was happy with them. Installed them in the Touring and it brightens things up quite a bit.

Yes, of course you can do better with other speakers. But for day to day and it being basically plug and play? Sometimes it's nice to keep things simple.

I just recently (2 months ago) installed BSW Stage 1 kit in my '02 Touring with Avant 3 and H/K system with original rear 6x9 woofers, and have to say that I think the system sounds a lot better after installing the BSW's, deeper/tighter bass from the front and cleaner mids/highs overall. The sound deadening kit did a great job of eliminating buzzing in the front door panels too.

would definitely recommend

Cool. Thanks for the replies!

Might tackle the rear speaker enclosures this weekend, just to see what's back there.

I believe 2-ohm 6x9 midbass units.

Found some CDT drivers that would fit, and might just get them along with the BSW kit.

would love to hear if you figure out a good way to replace the factory H/K rear 6x9 woofers in the touring model, if they are as crappy as the front woofers were (relative to the BSW's), should be a big improvement

please keep us posted! with photos too!

will do.

Just had a thought... I've read a few posts that say the mounting depth is really shallow back there. So, I might just take a knife/saw/rotozip to the opening and mount the speakers above that surface, rather than behind it. It'll be protected by the speaker grille, should look just fine, and provide for a far greater mounting depth.

OK, got a bug up my butt and decided to rip apart the rear enclosure to get to the speakers, really just to see what's back there. (And to give myself some options about what to replace them with.)

This webpage discusses removing all the bits, and it's pretty much spot on.

So, everything out, here's what we have:

2-ohm 6x9 "subwoofer"

The depth of the speakers is pretty shallow, true. But there is PLENTY of room in front of the speakers, like 2 inches, before you get to that visible grill that's in the big surrounding trim. I'm thinking I could take some MDF/Plywood and build up that speaker baffle to accommodate pretty much anything, I'd guess.

So, i went ahead and ordered a pair of CDT 2-ohm subs.

CDT ES-690CFS GOLD.2

https://www.cdtaudio.com/2ohm/subwoo.../es690cfs2.php

Mounting depth of 2.87".

I also went ahead and ordered the Phase 1 kit from BSW.

(I'd had a few cocktails friday night and was feeling frisky.)

Anyway, further updates as events warrant.

Has anyone thought about upgrading the head unit to professional instead of business? I've just ordered it and apparantly it sounds better than business stereo. I got hk. Will let all know if it improves things without swapping speakers.

I've not even seen this.

I did see that there are Alpine versions of the headunit, though. (Same front, but just manufactured by Alpine. I forget who made the other one tho.)

Is it a straight swap? I'll hunt it down unless you have a link!
