Why are they selling this part so high.

I can't believe how much they want for this cover.

Why do you need it? Missing or broken? If broken, there are fixes.

My guess for the high cost is that there is a limited supply. It's not like BMW is making or having them made any longer.

I needed one last year and it was less than $15. Light grey version. Guessing A2k is correct.

A lot of these random plastic trim pieces seem to have crazy high prices like this.

If I had to guess I'd say its due to the high cost for the OE suppliers to produce these parts in such low volume. What we're seeing is BMW passing that cost from their vendors down to us as the end user. Low demand usually means a higher cost per part because of the time and labor to switch up the production line for only a few pieces. All that cost adds up since it's no longer spread out over a high volume of parts like it was when these cars were still in production.

On some parts it also looks like vendors have changed and/or there is a new part number superseding and older part number. In those cases there may be additional new tooling costs involved so that also has to get spread over a much smaller volume of parts.

The good news for us is that BMW actually still makes these parts vs. discontinuing them completely.

The even better news is that right now E46's are plentiful in the salvage yards so you can almost always find the part you're looking for off a used car for cheap. The fact that these cars are low tech compared to new cars with infotainment, adaptive cruise, lane change departure, etc. also drives down prices. The other day I pulled a business CD stereo w/ aux input for only $15 since it was "just a radio".
