I thought I would be satisfied with 180 HP after 5 years of driving a 115 HP 8v Golf. Well, it's certainly better, but after 2 years in the BMW I'm craving more! After doing my research the S54 swap seems like the most logical route to take. More power than a supercharger, less complications than forced induction, similar cost, and stock reliability.

(As long as you dont rev past 7600rpm... I.e. Z4 s54 not m3 s54 redline.)

If I was doing it again I would go with a 330 engine for 1/4 the cost and install a twin screw. The s54 is a tad delicate for Phoenix temperatures. That and I am already shopping for forced induction anyway

Yeah, but the twin screw costs about as much as an S54. Looked into the m54b30, but it's only 40 HP more, which may get you right around the M3 power level with the twin screw.

For me it comes down to poor maintenance by the original owner, resulting in gummed up rings. I've been dumping in a quart of oil every 450 miles, or so, for the last 2 years/approx 30,000 miles, and I'm tired of it. I have a 2.5L (m52tu) long block in the garage, but if I'm going to pull the engine, why not upgrade. That and I really want a 6th gear to get the revs down @ highway cruise. We'll see, I haven't committed to anything, yet. Have a few other projects I need to finish up before I dive into a swap.

I wouldn't do it to change the investment. More for the difference in torque and how inexpensively and easily the m54 can be replaced.
As far as waiting to finish other projects.. I thought the same thing..... The I noticed a rolled m3 with 90k miles and cinnamon interior was at an auction in Vegas. What more could I ask for? A night in Vegas.... Way better drive train... And cinnamon interior to sell and offset cost. Next thing I knew I was on my way to Vegas with a trailer. Keep ur eyes on Copart and iaai. Good luck, it's crazy fun now.

After I hunted down original owner I found out it rolled through a cinder block wall going 90. He walked away without a scratch. It was some major carnage.

There's a shop about 15 min from me that does a lot of swaps, they usually seem to have one around. When I have the cash I'll see what they have.

I would still watch the auctions so u get a better feel for what they run for. Mine was destroyed and I paid 3800 after fees and all. Interior sold for 1500. Most of the time when I see people selling engines and transmissions they are asking more than that, makes me laugh a little. All the extra bits u get with a whole car are worth their weight in gold too.

I'm not scared of parting out a car, I've parted quite a few in the past. Just getting a little tired of it, and don't have the most space to do it in. Definitely something to consider, though. It all comes down to how thin the fleet is when the time comes. With 7 cars around, right now, space, and time, are at a premium.

My Ride: Alpine White M Cars
It is possible that a complete car, especially at auction will cost less, however my time is worth more something and parting out an interior, packaging and shipping is costly. As someone mentioned, I personally didn't want a car in the garage and I already have a reference m3 which helps.

For. Me, buying a low mileage engine was a requirement with a history. Junk yard cars do not have that. I do find some of the folks on here selling 100k engines for 5k hilarious though. After you buy hoses, little. Things like expansion tank etc, it gets costly!

Another item to consider, if you don't have the m3 rear, that's an incredible upgrade. If I hadn't ready converted to a 6 speed and m3 rear previously in prep, a whole car would have been a bargain

Hotchkis, with ISC coilover kit running 550 front 850 rear rates.. That was after playing with spring rates I tried a few before settling on 550/850. Handles GREAT.. I also grafted E36M3 front brakes on the last wagon.

I plan on turbo charing my zhp 3.0 motor after I get it in far more mid range torque than an S54.

Thanks for spring rates and bar info. B30 with a turbo would be a great daily driver, I really want to completely convert over and s54 or s62 were my choices.

Why e36 brakes over the 325mm e46? Just curious.

I had them and I was told the E46M3 brakes up front where to much bias wise. E36M3 worked great on track with OEM rear with PFC 11 race pads it stopped like throwing out an anchor...

Here is my 325XI touring, I just picked up 2 weeks ago. So far I've only done Euro tail lights and some clear side markers and corner lights. I do want to lower it with H&R race. Do you think it will be ok for my AWD system(front axles)?

Doing my best to find what I am looking for but alas "Sport" and "Race" and "H&R" is used a LOT in this thread when not really the subject. Debating Coils versus Sport versus Race springs(with blisteins) on the new wagon.

Any easy to view posts in this thread that have H&R Sport(for Wagon) or H&R Race on a wagon?
