Trizzuths maintenance thread

Bout time I make one of these. At least it will all be in one spot now. 225,000 miles just a bit past and replaced my FCABs yesterday after work as I had some front end wobbles. New lemforders and new bolts for the FCABs and aluminum subframe. Oil pan gasket leaking but not enough yet for me to want to do that job. Replaced both kingpins this summer with those from a cali z4 with 60k miles. Currently running on Brembo blank rotors and pads cut to match the car on George's pro-cut brake lathe. This weekend should see new cooling system overhaul and ccv replacement along with OFHG.

Thank god that horrible thread ended up ok for me. Next up (maybe this weekend): cooling system overhaul, with new OE expansion tank, both hoses, Wahler Thermostat, Heater Control Valve. Taking a chance and not replacing either of the sensors this time since they are superceded parts and I think they'll be good for quite a long time, but do need the green O-ring on the lower hose sensor. Car has so much new in the engine bay now, including my soldered ECU!

HA! What a nightmare. Seriously I felt like a college kid again, sleeping on my buddy's couch. But I'm far to old and large to do that anymore, at least it was somewhere warm and they fed me and took care of me, could have been far far worse if the car was stuck on the road somewhere and I had to get a random tow.

Still running strong, driving it on the daily and just about forgot that my ECU board is soldered! Waiting on a green o-ring to come in for my lower coolant hose temp sensor and then I will probably dig in and do that this weekend. Been like 120K on my current system so it's time.

Shitty car work day #2:

Replace cooling system - no big deal right? Yeahh. until I noticed that the coolant hose that connects to the bottom of the expansion tank and connects to the driver's side of the engine under the throttle body was so swollen by the metal hose clamp it looked like it was minutes away from bursting. No idea how or why it still held coolant but I am sure glad I found it!! So car is now down as I wait for my FCP delivery. Then as I decide to do the rest of the work so all I need to do is connect that hose and put the rest back together, I get to the Thermostat. Mad rusty bolt heads. A 10mm socket just spun on one of the lower bolts, and I got a 9mm on there, but didn't have enough torque to break the bolt free. Ended up having to dremel the bolt head as best as I could from under the car without getting metal shards into my eyes. Still wouldn't come off so I reverted to hammering a screwdriver into it and breaking it into pieces until I got it off. Thankfully the rest of that bolt came out with vice grips. I was lucky. Very concerned about plastic bits falling into my engine coolant passages but I felt way down in there and the only place anything could have gone was down below into the water pump area, and that was clean and filled with coolant on the bottom where any plastic would float. Pretty sure I am ok there as I double and triple checked everything even pulled the new t-stat and water pump out again and checked one more time to be sure.

Then I had it mostly buttoned up, waiting for new hose and closed my hood after checking many times for loose tools laying around. Hood was popped up a bit on driver's side, tried to release hood and it was stuck shut!!! Stuck for about 10 minutes of fiddling with the latch almost to the point of breaking it before it released. THANK GOD it released or i'd really be f'd!!!

Oh - and I was able to get successfully inspected prior to this job, still amazed that the car runs so well on a soldered ECU board!

Haaa here's what I found when I took my old heater valve apart looks like a spider had made his way through one of the rubber shock mounts and into a little plastic area where that capacitor or resister sits maybe he peed on the connections and made them corrode green like that lol. F u spiders. In my LED tails and now my heater control valve!!Click image for larger version

So my hose, new coolant level sensor and new aux fan switch sensor came in from FCP. Here's how it went down:

1. Been working from home Monday and Tuesday due to car being down (thankfully I can do this!) but needed to be in the office today.
2. Knowing I had to work on car probably late at night I put the pop up canopy up over the car in the morning so I would have a dry place to work.
3. Rain got progressively worse throughout the day.
4. Around 4 pm, I lost power, which never happens, and it was pitch black for about an hour while I paced waiting for UPS.
5. Power restored around 5pm, UPS arrives around 5:30, YES!
6. UPS delivers box to me and I almost shat myself as the size of the box was clearly smaller than the hose I ordered!! So scared, even asked UPS guy if that was all and he said yes. Opened box and the coolant hose was folded in half but I got everything I needed so THANK GOD!
7. Reinstalled everything for cooling system, filled with 50/50 of OE coolant and distilled water, let it sit while I went to my son's basketball game from 6:30-7:30.
8. Came back home, checked for leaks after cold bleed before, all looked good so I put it all back together before starting.
9. One last final check and I just happened to notice that the new ET I bought did not come with the large lower clip on the large circular hole that seats on the bottom.
10. Had to jack up car one last time, remove underbelly pan, insert clip, and put it all back together.
11. Started car and then opened cap and added a little more, but it was just about near the top.
12. Went for a 20 minute drive, came home all good, car temp perfect, heater valve working perfectly, interior temp in cabin is amazing, no more steering wheel tick!
13. Today, checked coolant level first thing and it was down low, so I added some. Red floater did not rise, hhmmmmmmm... I touched it with my finger and it immediately popped up over max. I had to remove some with turkey baster. Now it's at a good level, and after starting the car the coolant was pissing out the small overflow hole into the ET.
14. Drove 20 minutes to work and all good, now I have a 1 hour drive to another building later for a meeting so we'll keep an eye on things. Also have OE coolant 50/50 mix in car just in case.

Oh yeah, and I am rocking the front plate now because on my way to the ECU burning fest, I got pulled over as I exited the Pike tolls by Sturbridge. Cop was very nice, let me go with a warning, not your typical douchebag cop, but he was clocking me something fierce as I rolled through the booths. Must have been bored. Feel better having it on, zero worries about getting pulled over now other than speeding.

Oops, one more bump here, I think I may have finally fixed my brake wobbles!!! I have an ever so slight one that has been there for awhile after the latest cut on the Pro-Cut lathe, but it never got any worse and is most likely from the characteristics of the metal changing in that one high spot. I am confident that if I slapped new rotors and pads on the car now it would be as smooth as butter in the braking department. But I have another set that was machined down with just about new pads as well, waiting to go on next, I have rotors and pads for YEARS now due to this issue, yaay!

M3 has been parked in the garage since October. With the warm weather this week, I've been itching to get it out of there, but I think I'll wait a little while longer for all the salt on the roads to get washed away.

I replaced the M5 with a new Chevy Colorado Z71. Part of the reasoning was that I needed a truck for all the household projects I've been working on. The other was that the wife said I could buy a bass boat if I sold my Harley. So, I needed something to tow the boat with. I hate trucks, but the Colorado has been really nice to have and I actually don't mind it a bit. It's also nice to have something new and under warranty that I won't have to worry about for a few years.
