The M&P Shield is shipped with both an extended and flat magazine offering the ability to customize the length of the grip. The 9mm M&P Shield offers an 8+1 or 7+1 magazine capacity while the .40 S&W M&P Shield is standard with either a 7+1 or 6+1 magazine capacity. The M&P Shield will also be introduced in a California-compliant model. Both the 9mm and .40 S&W M&P Shield have an MSRP of $449 and are available now.

Someone tell me what this means...

It already has less than 10 rounds. What the hell is wrong with Cali?

I like the slim single stack grip. Have been in the market for M&P9C and SR9C.
If it's less than 400, this could fit the bill.

Msrp is $449, and initial reports are that the gun is being sold at MSRP for the first run, but will drop to around $400 soon enough. I can't confirm the validity of this, but it sounds reasonable.

Stores around here had them at $429. They're all gone already though.

Any opinions on what I should be on the hunt for? I have big-ass hands but can comfortably hold the LC9 with the grip extension.

Magazine disconnect
Loaded chamber indicator
$$$$ thrown at CA for "testing"

Went to my LE distributor. S&W has not distributed to LE yet, which is a huge shock to me. They have only focused on the commercial market for the initial run of SHIELDs. I can't even get a price or a SKU for the LE model. Either way, I'm on the list for when the SHIELD 9mm comes in. I think this will be my permanent ODC, and will replace my Glock 27.

Photo comparisons between the SHIELD and 9c:

No surprise that you didn't. S&W kept this a secret until a couple days ago.

Perfect timing. I just sold my Ruger LCP and I'm looking for a single stack 9mm as a replacement that is slightly larger than the LCP. This might be the one for me. I'll need to shop around to consider other options just so I don't feel like it is an impulse buy though.

Edit: I'm reading it has a thumb safety. Will this model be available without one?
M&P gurus - I'm reading that M&P safeties are removable. Is this correct?

I'm assuming thumb safeties would appear later after the .40 is out.

If the assembly is correct, than yes, the M&P safety can be removed. I did it on my gun and it was pretty darn easy.

These do look pretty sweet. My dad has been waiting on the Sig P938; I might have to show him this thing.
