I think my decision will probably come to the M&P Shield or a Kahr CM9.

Got my shield today after three weeks wait. It's awesome. Very light and thin. Now I am on the list for the shield 40

I'm hearing nothing but positive reviews of the Shield. I'm still waiting on the blue label models to go into production. Once they ship, I'll be getting mine.

Out of curiosity, why do you want both a 9mm and .40S&W?

When the 40 arrives I'll be giving the 9 to the wife she really wants one

Blue Label are the ones they build specifically for LE/GOV sales. They are the same gun, but the pricing is different (MUCH lower). Word is that the mags will also be black, but no confirmation on this one.

In re the Shield vs LC9, S&W makes a much better product. I don't know a single person who owns a Ruger LCP that hasn't had a problem with it. They're cheap guns with problems. Nothing leads me to believe that the LC9 would be any different. Besides that, the feel on the Shield is much better IMO. If you want a compact 9mm, the Shield is a good way to go. If you want smaller, look into the Kahr CM9. Can't get much smaller than that for a quality 9mm mini pistol.

Why wait? Just get another 9mm. I realize that they're the same size, but with the 9mm you get one more round of ammunition in the mag. There is no demonstrable ballistic difference between 9mm and .40 when using proper defense/duty loads. Plus, target ammo is WAY cheaper for the 9mm.

Only difference needed from the 9 and 40 is initial cavity (Which is minimal difference)

To be honest...I shoot a M&P 40c better than my dad's M&P 9c...that's why I carry a 40

As long as you are using duty/defense loads with a modern bonded bullet design and using AT LEAST a 9mm Para load, caliber selection against soft tissue targets is all shooter preference for handling and accuracy. When you start shooting through barriers, you can make more justifications for certain calibers and loads, but until that point, it's all essentially the same.

Like Locutus pointed out, the permanent crush cavity differences are very minor and really don't make any difference. Handgun bullets generally suck for putting people down effectively anyway, so it's all about shot placement. If you can shoot it well, it's the right cartridge.

Thanks for the response! I don't think I'd be eligible for the blue label....what is the cheapest price everybody has found for a shield 9mm?

I just want to add something to this. I have three good friends who are also cops, and they all carry the Ruger LCP as both off-duty carry and/or on-duty backup guns. Two have been sent back to Ruger for repair. The third has problems, but the owner refuses to send it.
While I have no experience with the LC9, I cannot believe that the quality would be anything better than the LCP due to the similarities of the design and materials. I've handled these things and fired the LCP, and it was just not anything I would ever feel comfortable spending my own money on. Just not worth it. A Kahr CM9 or S&W Shield? Definitely good.

How big are these really? My dad has a G26 he isn't really thrilled about and was looking at the new Sig P938, whenever it comes out...

It's about the same size as a Kahr CW9 or Walther PPS. I held one, and it was similar to what I would imagine a single-stack G26 would be like. There are lots of pictures of it online of in peoples' hands that will give you an idea. It was actually larger than I expected it to be, but it was still pretty compact in feel and design for carry.

I've been looking for about 3 months and I can't find one anywhere. Every store is telling me they get 1 a month, problems receiving them from manufacturer, or that they don't even bother trying. It's so frustrating...

They are in stock here.

I just have not had the time (or money) to pick one up.

I have also found them on the net at gun stores to transfer. $425 + $25 + $25

A friend of my wife owns a pawn shop and she says she stocks them (but is far away) for $375 out the door. I guess I'm stingy, and as much as I'd love to have one in my hand right now, I don't think it's worth the additional $100.
