M54 severe power loss

Hi everyone,

I know this is an E46 forum but the issues with my M54 engined X3 could be resolved by your experiences with the same engine in an E46 I'm sure.

I really need some help before I go ahead and purchase a new Vanos or pull all my hair out with frustration. I've got a severe power loss in my 2005 E83 2.5 petrol. The engine cuts out and goes into limp mode every time I drive it. If I turn the engine back on immediately some power is restored. My generic OBDII scanner only shows the 2A82 code for the intake. No other codes. I've swapped the intake solenoid out for an alternative one although not a new one and the symptoms are the same.

In the last year, the car has had new cats, new CCV, new knock sensors, new fuel pump and filter, new Idle Control Valve, new DISA valve as well as new Vanos seals.

I've rechecked the CCV and pipes, and the DISA for faults and all's good.

The car sounds really throaty as if it's trying to take in too much air, a bit like it's got no airbox attached. If I disconnect the VANOS intake solenoid the engine runs better, sounds closer to normal but is still lacking power.

There is an oil leak from the oil filter housing and I'm wondering if this is allowing air to leak into the oil filter housing and therefore the oil system and reducing the pressure or supply of air-free oil to the intake solenoid?

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks for your help.

Regards,
Mark

Have you changed the Cam sensors? Both Exhaust and intake...
