How was this effect achieved?

There is some sort of polar mapping going on but I haven't quite figured it out yet. I'm trying to figure out how they got a smooth transition from rectangular coordinates on the bottom half to polar up top.

I transformed it from polar to rectangular, then stretched it out 300% and got something somewhat coherent, but not quite normal. It looks like a panorama that tilts as it rotates...? edit: It looks like a geodesic...what used to be straight lines were mapped to a sphere.

Does anyone know how to map a picture to a path? I think the original 2:1 ratio picture was mapped to a geodesic of a sphere - the red line below - then transformed into polar coordinates

Photoshop can warp along a path. I'm not sure how to do it but I bet someone on Youtube can show you.

Sorry for the month late reply lol.
