Recommendation on a lens?

My wife is getting a Rebel XSi (body only). Any recommendations on a lens? We are beginners, but I don't want to grow out of something immediately. Anything with a decent zoom and still wide angle type of shots, or am I dreaming? I guess two lenses are a possibility if needed. I can't imagine I'd want to spend over $400 on the lens alone.

We're going on a trip to Europe in the spring, so I'm sure it will be put to good use there.

Thanks.

got my sister a canon 28-135 IS Lens which came with the 40d kit for her XTi, she loves it since it's got good range and quality. can be had for well under $400

Personally, I don't like Canon's selection on "all-around" lenses. I have a Rebel XT that I take with me when I travel. The lens I use is the Sigma 18-125mm f/3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM. So far I haven't had any problems with it and the wide focal range is a HUGE plus for me. You can find this lens online for about $340 now. Pricegrabber probably has some good places to look.

This Sigma is nice. You could also check out the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. I found mine on eBay in new condition for $350 shipped.

I've read a lot of Canon users on flickr who love using that one

I take it that a 28-75 or a 15-70 would be good for an all purpose lens for me? Enough that I can do wide angle as well as decent zoom? I've read a little bit on lens basics, so I just want to make sure.

Whatever you end up getting, do yourself a favor and pick up a Nifty Fifty lens (Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II) for around $80. It's my favorite of the three cheap lenses I have (stock kit lens and the 75-300). For the price point, I would certainly consider picking it up.
