325ci: Gear Box Oil Capacity

Can't seem to find the exact capacity for my 2004 5 speed manual transmission. I have one brand new quart and about 1/2 of another.

Not sure about yours but most of them are filled the same way as the trany...fill until it starts to run out and its full I think its around 2 liters, but I could be wrong.

By gear box, I mean the transmission.

My Mistake. The trany takes 11 liters if its completely empty (i.e. new or rebuilt). If you are just doing a change gasket/filter it most likely will take around 6L. If you are not flushing it out to replace most of the old dirty fluid with new before refilling. If you want to replace as much of the old as you can it could be 10 or more Liters, depending how dirty the fluid is. When I did mine it took 22L to get it running clean, and another 6 to fill it. YMMV. Search this site to find the flushing and filling procedure. Make sure you read all the cautions about this procedure, before you use it!

I think you're referring to an automatic transmission.

2 liters will do it. It probably takes less, but not sure how much less so dont know where the 1 and 1/2 quarts will leave you.

Yea that's my fear. According to my records I used 1.4 quarts back in 2017 when j first bought the car. But would be shitty to be just an eek shy.

You ought to be good then. Is what you have left in the partial what remains from the last time you changed it?

Yep. Bought her in 2017 with 135,000 miles. I changed the gear oil immediately and had some left over. Remaining 2nd quart is at my dad's so can't tell how much I have for sure. But my records say I used 1.4 quarts which leaves over 1.5 quarts.

I've contemplated trying 50% D4 redline atf and 50% redline MTL. Anyone else try this?

What state do you live in? If itís Minnesota then straight D4ATF is the way to go.

I will be doing this soon.

I just did it on my other manual. I have the remainder of the second quart still and I can verify this evening, but I am pretty sure you can just finish 2 drain and fills with 3 quarts on the 5 speed.

I also will be doing half MTL and half D4 ATF. I live with cold winters, but won't be driving this one so much in the winter. I used straight MTL in my other one with 169k miles. It has been driven fairly hard and I wanted the extra protection for my daughter who is just learning to drive and is pretty hard on the synchros. I haven't noticed the MTL to be too heavy.

I am more gentle with mine, but like a little extra protection since mine isn't low mileage either with 148k.

My recommendation with experience of different gear oil types.

Buy that OEM gearbox oil from BMW dealer.
For example, my car had that yellow sticker. I took photo of it and went for BMW.
They sold me correct amount oil ready in bottle. Price was approx 30$.
It is perfect. Smooth gear changes, no matter how cold we have. -35c, it is fine.

Did you consult the Owner's manual?

I'm not sure how much it takes, but the rule of thumb is to fill it through the fill hole until the oil comes out. My '94 325 5 spd takes 1.22 qts. I can't imagine your car taking very much more. You should have a puddle forming on the floor at about the same time as you get done pouring in the partial bottle. I think I would do the full quart first, then top it up with the partial quart.

The Bentley manual states the Getrag 5-speed takes 1.1 quarts and the ZF 5-speed takes 1.3 quarts.

I think my small block 316i manual box took approx 1,1 litres.
