these 600W fans were installed on stock Z4 and X3 with 'hot climate' package back in 2005. so they should fit the regular (non M3) E46 just fine, as long as you [1] convert the three pin connector and [2] remove that lower right arm so that it clears the AC compressor.

mount points on the radiator are the same (plastic rivet on driver side, torx screw on passenger side). the issue seems to be the depth of the fan. hence andy is removing that one piece of the plastic cage. i am just about ready to do the 05 so i will share some more pictures of the install.

x3 fan should not direct swap as mount point is difference than z4 and e46 but with a little modification we can use x3 fan with e46. note that motor is same except the shrould of the fan x3 is higher

interesting.. what modification to the mount point? i just re-measured between the mount points and both are 20.5 inches?

bear in mind i am replacing the mechanical fan clutch on the inside of the radiator with the electrical fan from the x3 .. not the aux fan on the outside of the radiator.

oh thank you. i see now. the width is the same but the height is different. so the bottom inserts on the e46 radiator will not suffice for the X3 fan. can you share a picture of your new drill hold/mount?

note that the bottom of the fan fits very well to the radiator but only the top side need to drill the hole and I hold it with cable tile and the other side use pieces of metal to hold it with original screw
