2003 BMW 330i - Future Updates shown in this Thread

Starting this new thread, where I will post all progress made on my (for my daughter) newly acquired 330i.

Purchased this vehicle last week Sunday, and will pick it up tomorrow morning.

Some of you may have followed my previous threads about the vehicle here:
https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1218090

...... and here:
https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1222034

This will be my daughters first car, and the following is planned for the vehicle:

- Oil and Filter change.
- Transmission Service, Fluid and Filter Change.
- Address squeaking Steering Wheel:
https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1223564

- Exterior Clean Up, address some scratches at my Buddy's Body Shop. Give it a nice detail, polish/buff job.
- Window Tint, the Northern CA sun and heat are brutal in the summer.
- BMW Rubber Floor Mats.
- Eventually a new set of tires, as the ones currently on the vehicle are pretty much shot.

I will keep the style 68 factory 17" inch wheels on the car for a while, as I think it will be better for a starting driver to have a bit more tire.
Eventually, I am thinking we may change to 18" inch wheels, but that will be down the road.

Excited about finally getting the vehicle home tomorrow.

Brought her home today. :)

Picked the car up in San Jose today and drove her home, 142 miles. Car ran flawless, and I am VERY HAPPY with my purchase.

The wiper blades on this car however were shot, driving home in the occasional downpour was not a lot of fun to say the least.

First thing after I got home, I replaced the wipers with BOSCH ENVISION Blades.

Hello E46 twin! Glad you're happy with it! How does your daughter like it? Was she a part of the retrieval trip?

Howdy.
Yes, so far I am VERY HAPPY with it and I think it will be awesome once I had a chance to put my personal touch to it. Definitely needs a good cleaning on the inside as well.

Nope, daughter had other plans today, so wife and son came along. But she does love the car for sure.

Congrats again on the "new" car - it looks fantastic. I almost bought an Orient / brown coupe back when I was shopping for my first E46 almost three years ago now.

Got any plans to detail the interior along with the exterior? If I may suggest, Gliptone's leather care products are excellent. The leather in your car looks in good shape and would likely benefit greatly from it. I'll attach a before / after picture of my (admittedly filthy at the time) seats below so you can see for yourself.

So, what I thought should be my last priority turned into my first priority. After a closer look at the tires, it explains why they did sound pretty loud and felt a bit "hard/harsh" on the ride home yesterday.

Attached pictures should explain why, tires are totally weatherworn and are cracking, guess I should replace VERY SOON.

Took my daughter to have her drive her new car close to my place of work this afternoon, and took the opportunity to take a few more pics.

Car will go in for an oil change, as well as transmission service by the end of the week.

Also purchased a set of CONTINENTAL Control Contact Sport A/S tires for the car.

Stayed with the factory sizes of 225/45/17 & 245/40/17.

America's Tire Company had a $70.00 mail in rebate on Continental Tires, so I took advantage of it.

Tires will however not go on until early April, as I want to take the wheels of the car and clean them up, prior to installing the new tires.
Unfortunately, my schedule is somewhat limited and I will not be able to get to cleaning up the wheels prior to the weekend of March 24/25.

Looking good! Almost makes me want a sunroof...almost.

Jealous of your xenons, too.

I'm guessing you work in an aviation-related field? If so, again---jealous.

Thanks Spannerhead.
Yeah, we love our sunroofs in Northern CA for sure. Xenon's are nice, wish I had those on my E-Class as well.

I do not work in an aviation related field, but my manufacturing facility for SIEMENS is located in an ex Air Force Base, now converted to a business park in Sacramento, McClellan Park.

I work in the Train Industry and have been with Siemens here in Sacramento for 26 years. Started in our manufacturing plant which is located in South Sacramento, where we build Light Rail Vehicles and Locomotives, as well as Passenger Coaches for the North American market.

The Locomotives and Coaches for All Aboard Florida (AAF), a recently opened private high speed line in Florida were all built here in Sacramento.

My division had to leave the main plant due to space constraints, and we moved into McClellan Park, where I am the Production Manager and responsible for the overhaul/refurbishment/modernization of Light Rail Vehicles that have been in service for 15 years plus.

Car went to the dealer today for an oil change as well as transmission service. The following items were noted during their inspection and what they quoted me to do the work:

- Front Brake Pads and Rotors. $827.00
--> (Pads are at 3mm and rotors are supposedly at their service limit).
- Drive Belt cracked. $249.00
- Oil Filter Housing and Vanos Line Leaking. $798.00
---> (a bit puzzled by the Oil Filter Housing, as it was fixed prior by the previous owners dealer at 93K miles in 2015, I have the service receipt for that???).
- Front Lower Control Arm Bushings. $1050.00 including alignment.

At this point I declined all of this work, as I need to take care of these one after another, as money does not grow on trees.

Maybe you can help me determine in which order this should be addressed?
- I would think brakes first, as this is a safety concern.
- Next the drive belt, Oil Filter Housing, Vanos Line and Control Arm Bushings most likely to be equally important???

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

What I also noticed was that the front turn signal lights are not identical. I knew the passenger side had a crack and needed replacement, but after closer inspection, I noticed that the cracked passenger side has the BLACK interior trim, while the intact driver's side light housing has the TITANIUM/SILVER interior trim.
Went ahead an located a used TITANIUM/SILVER one, as I thought it would be best to just match the drivers side which is not broken, rather than buying 2 new black interior trim lights (Dealer could not tell me based on my VIN # with which interior trim these turn signal lights came from the factory).

Should have the new light to replace the cracked one on the passenger side next week.

Next on the agenda is to clean up the curb rashes on the wheels, prior to putting the new CONTINENTALS on.

You really should find a good, independent, BMW mechanic to do work that you don't want to do yourself. There is no point in getting service from a dealership for a car that is out of warranty. They are simply way more expensive than necessary. A good BMW indy will use OEM parts, but charge way less. The dealership's quote for brakes is about $300 more than what my indy charged me. If you don't mind, how much did the dealership charge for the transmission service?

You're daughter is very lucky! She has a really sweet ride!

Hello Gunther. Thanks for your input and I do agree with you.

There are two reputable Indy shops in my area I am aware of and whom I have been taking my cars to over the years. I ALWAYS call all 3, 2 Indy's and the dealer for a price quotation based on the work that needs to get done.
I think I should have pointed out that I was NOT planning on having this additional work done at the dealer due to the price, I was simply sharing what the dealer quoted. I will get quotations from my 2 known independent shops.

Believe it or not, but for years, the dealer has been cheaper on an oil change (as I will NOT take my cars to Jiffy Lube or Midas) compared to the indy shops I deal with.

Dealer charged me the following today:
- Full synthetic Oil and Filter $89.95, Indy quoted me $120.00
- Transmission Service was $441.65, Indy quoted me $525.00

This is the ONLY reason I would go to the dealer compared to one of my Indy shops.

Thanks for your nice comments about the car. Yes, my daughter is indeed very lucky and she knows it.

The 330i cars came with the front turn signal lights with the silver interior trim, where the 316-328 came with the black interior, regardless of whether the outer side was white or orange.

While this is for a car not from the US, it will show you the part#:

Great Information, thanks very much.

I therefore at least was lucky enough to make the right decision, by replacing the black one with the silver.

Received and installed the correct and matching Passenger Side Turn-Signal Housing today. (In the rain as you can see. )

Also received the BMW 144 paint for my wheels from my paint supplier today, who provides the paint for our Refurbishment Facility. He mixed it in an aerosol spay can for me, including primer and clear-coat. Hope the weather will clear up soon, so I can clean up these wheels in order to install the Continentals.

Nice feeling when things slowly but surely move along, in order to bring this car back to what it should be.

Interesting that you have the chrome grille slats whereas mine are black and our cars are nearly identical. I wonder if that was a dealer option?

Turn signals look great!
