Read my post farther up. I'm pretty sure your lock actuator(s) are beginning to fail or have already failed. I replaced mine a few months back. The problem has never come back.

central locking problem

had my car checked with a mechanic and plugged the computer.. there are errors in the module.. but the weird part is that for the past 3 days before i brought my car to him the unlocking is working properly.

will have it check again as it may be a loose connection, or probably a dirty mechanism inside the door panels..

we are in same boat.
I have a exactly same problem and past a month, it works ok.
But the module is too expensive so I think I have to live with.

I have the same problem on my 99 320Ci since almost a year now and it is getting worse.

Which lock actuators have been replaced for you? left, right or both?

My problem is that doors won't unlock unless I use the key. But passenger door won't unlock at all.

omg I've only had my 01 330ci for a few months and I have the same problem as all of you. Seems that with such a common problem with these cars, BMW would have a recall to fix it? Maybe my car is too old tho. Out of warranty too =(.
This problem is not only a hazard, but embarrassing too!! Such an expensive car to have to climb through windows.

This problem is getting ridiculous. My friend had to go to the hospital in an emergency and the ****ING door wouldn't unlock!!! Lucky for us, we happened to be at a friends house who let us use their car!! This is ridiculous! I hope BMW realizes what a hazard this problem is and what a huge safety issue it is.

I found that when I replaced the battery in the key, it never happened again.

I don't think replacing the battery in the key will help me. The alarm chirps that it's turning on and off, just the door locks themselves won't move.

it seems to be happening for most cars that are around 99-01. I had the same problem and replaced the actuator for on side.
If both don't lock and unlock at the same time or you are having troubles disarming the car, it might be the key battery

Nah, locking has never been a problem, just unlocking. And it does happen to both sides, but fortunatly I can unlock the driver's side with the key.
I doubt it's the battery inside the key because the alarm beeps and the parking lights flash that it's unlocking, but the locks themselves physically don't move/unlock. That's why I think it's the actuator.

Note: there was a couple times where I held in the gas cap door (i pressed in on it gently, incase the pin was caught too tight) and it worked! The door locks opened!! So weird...

BYUNTS, was it a pain to do the work or did you take it in?

Your key has removable batteries?

The key does not take batteries and even if it did it's close to impossible to open the key without damaging it.

BTW I have the same exact problem with my locks and everybody I ask tells me the problem is the lock actuator.

mine is the fat key and yes you can remove the batteries. you take out the little cover, take out the two phillips screws and there it is. Some keys charge off the ignition barrel.
good luck

I didnt know 99 e46's had different keys

Just curious as to what type of battery your style of key holds? Is it like a standard round watch battery type?
