I'm not 100% as i have't hunted deer. Penetrating power should be plenty but i would think you'd have to get within pretty close range otherwise you'd have to lob that round at the deer. We get pretty close in with the hogs, usually not more than 50yds and inside a wooded area. Windage isn't an issue, but lobbing one 150yds across a meadow with a cross wind... i would image you'd have to be really good or plan on doing some tracking.

This is all from my very hypothetical guesswork.

I just know that being a heavy, slow round, the ballistic drop is going to be significant.

Pretty sure i posted this before, but this is the round i found in the last pig i shot.

.300BLK has similar ballistics to the .30-30win, which has been a very popular "brush" round for hunting in the North woods. The round is very effective at close range, and generally can drop deer out to 200yds.

hmmm...maybe I'll just get a 300blk upper for my AR and use that instead of a new rifle.

Where I go, the shots will go out to 200-300yds easy (NW MN farm land) but my stands are in the woods so not too horrible. I use a .270win now.

Also, not to thread jack too much, but I'll need to talk to you about upgrading a low end R700 vs buying a higher end rifle. I kinda want to do the upgrading just to get the experience but curious of how in over my head I'll be going that route.

Look at 6.8SPC of 6.5Grendel uppers.
I have some thoughts on M700s (have owned 2) I'll post up on general discussion (unless you want to make a thread about it) when I get back from the gym.

Toss your comments into general if you would. I'm not ready to buy one until summertime (wife wants a new kitchen lol) but I'm starting to get my ducks in order so I know what I'm doing before I take the plunge.

FWIW, I'm currently using a Tikka T3 in .270win for deer and hunt exclusively in NW MN up by thief river falls.

Sorry for the thread jack!
