Did you not see the petrolicious spread? Or the 100 page bimmerforums build thread? or the m5board thread?

Now then, I've already moved on, something else caught my eye:

Now this I want. The FF is the Ferrari I'd actually want to buy, a V12 hatchback is so insane that it's awesome.

This is the one they took to the "snow" to prove the prowess of it's all wheel drive. Imagine that, a ferrari, in the snow. Talk about an instant way to kill your resale value. No ferrari should ever see snow as that means salt and that means it's in there for life.

I wouldn't drive it in the snow but I'd certainly drive it in the winter. I think the bigger problem would be ground clearance and tires (which can be fixed) more so than the AWD system.

I think a Ferrari in the snow would be fine provided you cared for it. Most modern cars do just fine in the snow in regards to rust.

Doesn't surprise me.. I guessed that there would be a $35k reserve

Will we see mid-40s?

Not every state is stupid enough to use salt on the roads and ruin all the vehicles. We get snow in Idaho but we use sand and de-icing fluid here, no rust issues on the cars here.

Is that the 812 Superfast? I'm guessing so, so you mention 'insane' and 'awesome'. What a beastly machine.

"Deicing fluids come in a variety of types, and are typically composed of ethylene glycol (EG) or propylene glycol (PG), along with other ingredients such as thickening agents, surfactants (wetting agents), corrosion inhibitors, and colored, UV-sensitive dye. Propylene glycol-based fluid is more common due to the fact that it is less toxic than ethylene glycol."

Yeah, it the de-icing stuff works ok at higher temps but turns everything into a solid block of ice when the temps get low enough. Salt works the best IMO.

That E39 is

But the dry rot and other maintenance items foregone would be quite pricey.

I totally agree, but looking at the general condition of this car, and interior, it certainly appears to have been sitting in a climate controlled garage the entire time which would help somewhat with the dry rot of plastic and rubber.

Worth every bit of ~25k purchase price & parts/a weekend of tinkering.
